  • Is there a criteria or standard of what an Hip Hop artist should be as the GOAT? Or is it just on personal opinion and subjectivity?

Now if there is a criteria? What truly does an rapper/artist have to be the GOAT? Lyrics? Concepts? Creativity? Flow? Musicality? Sales? Impact? Quotables?

Would love to hear you guys perspectives on the matter. Very interested.

  • I think “objective” GOATs (or as close to objective as possible) should be defined by how well they are the “full package.”
For instance, Pac did almost everything a rapper needs to do really well, so he would be an “objective” GOAT to me.
Subjectively, though, I think anyone can be a GOAT if you like what they do enough. Tyler’s best album isn’t even a rap album (imo) and he’s still a “personal GOAT” to me

  • It's obviously personal opinion. There's people that hate Nas, Hov, Em, Biggie, and Pac who are pretty much the consensus top 5

To me to be the GOAT or in the conversation you need to be elite in lyricism, consistency, body of work, popularity, longevity and probably one or two more categories I can't think of off the top of my head

Before this year Kendrick was just barley in my top 5 but now he's my number 1

  • It'll always be subjective no matter what people say because the music ultimately has to resonate with you.

Also, people place more value on different things from rappers including sales, hits, rhyme schemes, storytelling, flow, discography, production, longevity, influence, features, innovation, etc.

Go back to the thread where you said:

''this is a wild ass motherfucking hard flex''

    About this line:

"I think that Oakland show gone be your last stop''

No reason to derail an interesting thread with your nonsense.

  • If we talking rap, then you need to write your own bars.

Longevity, multiple classic albums. Good RAPPER not just a singer with a flow. Meaningful songs too, not all just party tracks.

Like there's niggas who say Wayne can't be a GOAT anymore because he's not as relevant as he once was but this nigga's still blacking out on tracks.

Meanwhile, Jay hasn't dropped an album in 7 years and his features this decade were kinda average, barring God Did.

But many would rank Jay over Wayne because Jay's older albums has more nostalgic value than Wayne's and he fits the "elder statesmen/boss" image more than Wayne who still comes across as a bit aloof to many people.

That just goes to show how subjective it is though because I personally have Wayne ranked over Jay but I can also see the arguments for Jay being ranked over Wayne.

All of the GOATs in rap have been involved in rap beefs (Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, 2Pac, Kendrick)

  • It's personal opinion, otherwise it would have been solved by now

  • goat as a tier- classic albums, features 2+ feature runs, one hit song (doesn’t have to be radio but has to be a summer where everyone was listening to it)

goat as a singular title - pure preference

It’s also partly availability too because a lot of Wayne’s best work isn’t available on streaming
