At the same time, I don't know how much to trust these $20/30 fast fashion brands like Asos, Shein, and Boohooman.
So I'm wondering do you guys have any experience buying decent pants from those brands? Is there some middle ground in the $50-$80 range?

wrangler 13MWZ/ cowboy cut is a good option too if you want denim. Often a lot cheaper than 517s for a very similar cut denim

No d*** smashing (had to sleep in em at the start of the pandemic at times when I didn't have stable housing and even then I was good) and don't pill either

The carpenters/painters are fine, i just assume most people talk about 873s when they mention d***ies and i could never wear those comfortably, s*** has no room for your s*** and combined with the stiffness on new pairs make it unbearable to even break in

I don't f*** with 873s anymore but as bad as they were I don't even consider em crushers because of how horrible 874s are in that regard
