Has rap stagnated so much that an album that’s over 15 years old is considered “modern”?
pretty much, was gonna say it's actually kind of depressing that we still have to talk about these same albums over and over
Graduation is his best album. It was peak healthy Kanye .
I also remember that album being played perpetually my entire summer break in middle school and, those beats were sound breaking back then
It’s the perfect version of why people were disappointed with TML and Sideline Story and Wale/Sean’s career
Peak of that style of rap
Exactly
Ye was able to implement pop/electronic elements (synths, Chris Martin feat, Daft Punk sample), incorporate the trends of that time (Wayne and T Pain feats, Toomp production), and still maintained the essence of his sound (Everything I Am, Champion, Glory)
Album had a bit of everything but was cohesive and well received by the masses. The sound and messaging resonated with a wide audience. A true blockbuster rap album
The structure of Grad was highly influential. Listening to other albums that follow the same blueprint really shows how great of an ear Ye has. Everything came together seamlessly on that album. Every song comes with its own experience. It’s in a class of its own. Can’t think of any other rap albums like that
Think it’s interesting to see the musical universe created as a result of an album that had a big impact. Albums like TML, BP3 feel like an extension of the world Ye created with Grad

no i think its just a timeless enduring album some from that era sound very dated
First three Kanye albums are timeless music pieces up there with the old farts like Beatles Pink Floyd hippy nonsense

No offense to u in particular but y’all take everything on this site so literal
Modern music could be Thriller it really just depends on what type of conversation we’re having

We not even in that era anymore. Anything post pandemic is a diff era

Spot on with “blockbuster rap album”. I’ve been thinking of that concept a lot lately, GRODT is another one that comes to mind in a whole different type of way.
But you hit it on the nail with the messaging and how TML / BP3 kinda seem like they continued from that “world”. Lowkey it started a subgenre for a few years both with albums like that and the knockoff attempts/inspiration it had in the underground

Well rap is a genre that isn’t that old compared to pop so if you’re talking about rap being modern you would think it would be something in the past 5-10 years
