I love approaching race in hero content to ground it in our reality. Show all of those issues still exist but telling a literal alien in hiding "even you dont think of blackness " is doing the absolute MOST.

Alien impersonating a white human in America, you think a black person wouldnt address race in some fashion in that moment?

I think Bernadette’s dialogue was fine. Heavy handed? Eh I didn’t necessarily feel that way, but won’t argue against it. I think it just feels that way because the messaging for the Black American plight, has been the same for the last 30-40 years in Hollywood.
So anytime you hear it, especially in this age where everything is meme’d ad nauseam, it sounds cliche, pandering self righteous babble.

But it’s clear the message is still needed based on some replies itt. Goofies talking bout cause they’re middle class the message ain’t hit the same. You clearly are not picking up on subtext, and have a very limited understanding of what she (Bernadette) even said. Various socioeconomic factors are at play. Racism doesn’t disappear for black people the higher we get on the pay scale.Jon even reveals as much when mentioning how hard it was to sell the diamond the Guardian have his mom.

Alien impersonating the most common person in type in the area they are currently living . You think they would just choose a minority of any population? They aren’t trying to stand out

I mean I think what many of you all are missing from what the person who said they are middle class is are that yes middle class black people experience racism. S*** I have been middle class before with a single mom. The racism does not compare to when you are lower class with no family in the government man. Choosing to work for the government specifically the military or marines in any form or having your loved ones enlist. Wanting your loved one to become a space cop. When you dont even know the travesties happening to aliens or whoever in space. You dont know enough about the lantern corps as a human being to know what they are doing.

All while having your black son aim at his black dad risking him blowing his dad head smooth off and taunting the dad and son by asking if they are afraid. Until its your turn to have the apple on your head. All while this doesnt really seem to play a part on their relationship or understanding of each other years later. Not really exploring the juxtaposition of all that. Besides her immediately feeling Hal had it easy and the aliens should have researched the fear of a black man when interviewing a black man for the role.

Its a bit much man. He isnt running for president but she treats it more like running for president or something earth like.

Ehh that’s one thing thats hard for me to buy into… saying black people shouldn’t enlist in the military, when it’s historically been one of the best ways of class mobility for our people. It isn’t without its problems of course.

Racism, specifically anti-black racism is prevalent at every level. The only difference is how much you’re able to insulate yourself from it affecting your day to day. A lil bread ain’t changing that in US. You still a nigga in a coup.

As for the particular methodology in how they raised Jon, yea that s*** was extreme, we’ll see how much it’s affected his adult life in more episodes I guess. I don’t have any particular thoughts on it other than it’s a good origin story if I’m being honest.

You gotta be twice as good to get half as much as these yt people.

I am not saying black people shouldnt enlist in military or marines. I am saying its worth addressing the fact that he enlist in the marines follows orders there. Was subjected to shooting apples off heads all in the goal of being a space cop. that is something to look into . What if John Stewart during his time as a lantern sees aliens being persecuted the same as black people. That is something to explore . Does he continue the same things he sought to dismantle. Does he report it? How does he act.

1000% agreed, there's always a bunch of whining when a show mentions anything black. I think people don't realize the times we're in, racism can be caught in 4k and they'll still dance around it. The message was definitely needed. The discourse around this episode proves that.

Double entendre. Sci-if genre usually doesn't have non-yt ppl in space.

I think that is something that can be explored in later episodes or seasons if the show goes on. This is the first season. The whole whataboutism for alien discrimination is kinda

  • Primate

the whole "they dont see us cuz we're black in America" theme fell kinda flat for me

would have landed better if John Stewart's family was impoverished and that could have informed their outlook. but instead his family looked cushy upper-middle class with a big ass house and with his dad being a Marine makes the whole thing comes off as forced commentary.

i also didn't quite understand his mom's obsession with raising him to be a Lantern. like to what end? both his parents seem absolutely insane and i hope they explore the psychological impact of that on John. they robbed a kid of his childhood to get him to potentially become a GL. but based on his last interaction with his mom this episode, I feel like they won't go down that road.

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre together really carry this show. most of the episode felt boring but the minute Chandler was back on screen, its like show got all its life back.

    What an awful take lol

What throws you off? People dont have to be 100% black or have jet black skin to be proud to be black. Tf

“ the whole what aboutism for alien discrimination “ . Do you not see the first time meeting an alien disguised as a white woman to explain race relations as odd ?
