This might come off kind of lame to say but Fantano being so sober & safe really makes him unable to give quality reviews on artists who were clearly on d**** making the music and their fans who listen to the music on d**** as well.

And I will throw basic weed and alcohol into that “drugs” blanket for the sake of the point.

I mean it wasn’t completely thought out, but I stand by the idea. Like I get he is a much better person than I am, he is woke and compassionate and vegan and so knowledgeable but he loses the mark with me sometimes with his inability to indulge in the overall vibe of some records.

Sometimes he is very charitable to certain short comings on a project, but then other times he can’t even see the potential of the artists future.

For example: he trashed Lil Peep... mostly because Fantano is a real deal scene kid who was there for the real stuff, as was I and was so cringed out by seeing his culture and the generalities of rap fused together in such a straight forward way... but then after he died he saw some of the value in COWYS PT2 and Peep’s voice.

My point being is that Fantano isn’t in any of the clubs, he rarely sees live performances in person, and he will judge a 19-23 year olds material like it is a capstone moment of a 35 year old Grammy winner when it’s convenient for him to show superiority.

    Interesting take

I think he does see live shows often. He certainly did growing up anyway.

In the end his ratings = his amount of enjoyment

I don’t really think he goes to many shows at all, he typically posts on Instagram the ones he does go to. Since he is a public figure he also has to get passes and stuff and it is more of a bigger thing for him to do. From pictures it looks like he was more of a local scene/lower tier emo/post-hardcore/punk kid.

For the past decade I haven’t seen him attend one festival, which a good portion of music is more for as well.

And then finally by no means was I implying you have to take d**** to enjoy music but his overall state of mind is so foreign to the communities that are creating and absorbing the music.

Obviously an untraveled quiet person with no intention to push the limit would rate MBDTF and this Grimes album with a lower score.

It’s corny that he isn’t willing to give Grimes credit for her cultural level up moment when the entire music industry is moving toward less cohesive projects to gain new fans by covering multiple streaming markets and pushing cultural boundaries through theme and aesthetics.

Was the album sloppy in some places? Yes. Was it a 8 or a 9? No. BUT did the situation call for a 8.5 quality perfect pop concept album? No.

His review reflects his general safety, which conflicts the edge persona he will sometimes evoke and played down after The Fader hit piece.
