it could be both. studying a novel coronavirus strain from nature or something in the lab, and poor lab safety and protocol let it leak. just because it's a lab leak doesn't mean china were maliciously developing a virus. either way, the chinese government downplayed it (so did the US).

if the lab story is true, i definitely don’t think they released it on purpose. they were either doing what you said (researching a natural strain) OR experimenting with/creating viruses (as i’m sure most world powers do) and it leaked by accident

either way, it was an accident it came out. major f*** up though

a tin foil thought i have is.. that’s why i think the virus rarely affects kids. kids are how the global population survives as they are the future. if someone was to develop a virus, they either ethically wouldn’t want it to kill children or used that as a fail safe if it leaks so their own population could still survive

The Wuhan lab got its funding and direction from EcoHealth Alliance, under Peter Daszak, which is 80% funded by the Department of Defense, the National Institute of Health, and USAID.

“Gain-of-function” (GoF) research is a thinly veiled euphemism basically for bioweapon work that takes a weak disease and modifies it to be more transmissible in humans - ostensibly under the guise that it helps predict potential future mutations to look out for. Many scientists have condemned such research for fear of accidental leak.

EcoHealth tasked the Wuhan lab with continuing the work of Ralph Baric, a rapid GoF biochemist for like 3 decades at the University of North Carolina who specifically worked on beefing up bat coronaviruses. He’s highly published and considered to be the foremost expert on the subject. He published papers on the subject with Shi Zhengli, who brought samples to and conducted the research at that Wuhan lab.

I still hold that it is an accidental leak. It’s a totally apolitical standpoint that recognizes the danger of GoF and the storied history of lab mishaps.

The current coronavirus genome is a 96% match to a virus that same lab found in 2013 in batshit in a cave.

The article also mentions that people in the experimental pathology/virology field are obliged to upload genetic sequences into an accessible database. From there, any lab with internet access and the proper equipment can search up a virus and “print” it for their own experiments

So that puts the Wuhan origin in question. It could be from anywhere. And given that traces of the virus were found in France and Belgium as early as November 2019, and even March 2019 in Spain (not to mention the slew of mysterious covid-like symptoms in the US in fall 2019) ; it seems like it was circulating before it spiked in Wuhan

They definitely didn't mean to release it on purpose considering how crazy China's response was to try and desperately catch this thing before it went worldwide. They poured insane amounts of money to try and keep it isolated and probably ended thousands of lives doing so.

Anyone genuinely thinking this was a purposeful leak from scientists in China need to rethink things
