People often revere LIG as the last hit song before the pandemic happened lol. That’s why I think it had some momentum in 2020.
2020 was such a bad year, not only the pandemic it was all the social injustice issues going on. BL was the perfect storm, not only it came out before the pandemic it had the retro 80s sound where people can take a trip back to memory lane. At the time, the now sucked.

Yes BL is successful I’m not knocking that, but it being “Highest charting single oat” is nice stat but in no way does it put it in the category of Thriller.

If it was a normal year most likely BL would’ve had more competition. Who knows, maybe Rihanna would’ve dropped or something. After all people were begging for her drop music. In a pandemic and the issues 2020 why would she even bother?

I’m not saying it’s not real music but saying it in that pretentious way usually is making a distinction between “oh this is just pop music but this on the other hand is REAL music”

It’s kind of a lame and outdated mindset to have even if you’re talking about Kanye or Kendrick or Frank, but with The Weeknd’s pop music it looks absolutely insane, Max Martin is kind of THE person who if you have that “real music” mindset he wouldn’t fit into it, he’s associated with making the most universally inoffensive pop
