I have never met an Asian, Indian, Muslim, or Jewish person in Flatbush, Canarsie, Flatlands, Bedstuy, or Brownsville who spoke like an African, Caribbean, or American nigga in my whole life.

I thought niggas was trippin at first (cause honestly I aint heard awkafina in years) til I saw a tweet pull up a clip from those days

And yeah, nah. She sounded ridiculous. Like I knew Indians that grew up on the bad side of Queens that said nigga that didn't sound THIS ridiculous lol. (not saying it was right, I'm just saying these are the experiences of people I met when I was in college up here for my undergrad)

The issue's a number of things, 1. She's from Forest Hills that people around that area say the black population is noticeably small (but hey nyc is nyc, she can travel) so people were confused.

2. When you say things like "I refuse to do accents. I’m not OK with someone writing the Asian experience for an Asian character. I make it very clear, I don’t ever go out for auditions where I feel like I’m making a minstrel out of our people.” while knowing how you got here was a character who's whole thing revolved around your voice being an exaggerated caricature of AAVE, it sounds funny.

3. (and this aint just a her problem), there's this sentiment that every non-black person fully indulges themselves within black culture to pop off and get on but as soon as they start "going legit" they shove that s*** to the side. As if to say that same black culture is lesser. Can't help but have a bad taste in my mouth about that. I think that's what people's biggest problems with shawty wop is moreso now that she's in movies and professional s*** now we all just supposed to act like what got you there never happened (you see she's shut that accent and that alias down completely since she's became "legit")

now are there more important things to be offended about than another non-black POC in hollywood using black culture to their own benefit? Absolutely. But @ShintaroKago it is an issue that folks have a right to feel a way about lol.

Me personally? In spite of this essay, I just dont care that much, she got pushed off twitter. Damn. They come for everybody oh well. she'll be aight. NAACP been corny. End of story g'night lol.

Awkwafina is from mothafuckin Stony Brook, NY and grew up in Forest Hills, Queens with her Chinese and Korean extended family. I don't wanna hear a f***in thing about "It's just what I grew up around!" B**** where!?
