She had every right to clap back.

The problem is that he said she had “main character syndrome” on an album that is about her struggle with her cancer diagnosis.

If he was aware of her having cancer, then him calling it “main character syndrome” for her to make an album speaking about it is a ridiculously s***ty and inhumane thing to say.

And if he wasn’t aware of her having cancer, then he failed as a reviewer and didn’t make sure he was well-informed on the album he was reviewing and didn’t thoroughly understand what the album was about.

People aren’t mad because he didn’t like the album, they’re mad because of his very specific phrasing of saying that she had “main character syndrome” on an album about her having cancer.

If he gave the album a 0/10 but didn’t use that very specific phrase to dismiss the album, then there wouldn’t be such an uproar about the review

I didnt hear the album or watch the review and dont really plan on it so I dont really have a strong opinion

But it does come off as being upset the music wasnt perceived the way she wanted, and she has a history of such.

But also on the other hand fantano can just be very off in his reviews and i think artists should be able to challenge critics to some degree.

It doesn’t come off that way at all if you’re aware of how he criticized the album

While yes its a reviewer job to know what they're reviewing, i still dont put it on a critic to know the full context of every album when they do and maybe the music didnt effectively relay that she was a cancer survivor. But I also dont put it past fantano for simply not catching that

imo, you do not need to learn the background of an album to enjoy it
If the work warrants a deep dive after you enjoy it, then by all means

E.g. I'm not about to do a Lil Xan deep dive/background research for Total Xanarchy

i like fantano generally. usually his videos are well written critiques even tho i don't agree with his take all the time. he has his perspective and speaks it well.

that said, he gets too troll-like with his scores, often giving an album like iceman a comically bad score that is out of touch with reality. maybe it's his reality - he really hates drake so it's a 2 out of 10 for him. but then why even review a drake album? that's where the click bait monetization comes in.

i think there will always be a natural conflict between artist and critic. it's an age old war - give someone a bad review on a significant platform, and the artist will hate you. what can you do- critics are going to critique.

i havent listened to the halsey album so thats why i dont have a personal take on it specifically

You are not someone who makes a living off of reviewing albums. If that is your job, then yes you absolutely have to be educated on the background of the album and the context it was made in before listening to it
