I did a video looking into the power of artists being "mysterious" on social media and how it can affect their perception and their fanbase by building hype levels

what I'm curious though is, how has social media affected the way you perceive the acts you listen to?

has an artist ever been so annoying on social media that you couldn't enjoy their music anymore? or maybe on the flip side, has an artist been funny enough that you decided to check their music out?

Before I watch, Meek Mill's social media has definitely harmed my enjoyment of his music. I'm still and forever will be a fan (especially growing up in Philly seeing him literally grow from nothing to maybe the most successful rapper of that generation after the big 3) but I just am not checking for him like that the way every single time I see a Frank Ocean Instagram story I check it immediately, even though it is probably nothing

kanye west invented social media and im glad for the times he expressed greatness on there

  • No but social media fans have definitely done so. Drake stans, Em stans, Ye stans, Taylor stans etc....

Would not fault anyone for disliking any of those artist based off their fanbases alone lol

The weeknd was super annoying and corny on twitter before his team finally commandeered his account. Definitely affected his aura for me when he still had it during the after hours era

When it comes to artists, choosing to remain mysterious can be reserved to a fault. A comparison I like to use is the weeknd vs frank. Weeknd is the best example of using both spectrums to his advantage and has benefited the most from his mysterious “indie band” speculation days to his 2015 mainstream revelation. Frank on the other hand potentially reduced his appeal and exposure to broader audience since the release of Blonde by not capitalizing on his momentum compare that to the weeknds output since BBTM and it’s fair to say that mysterious motion isn’t always the right move if you want to advance your career

wouldn't say it really affected my enjoyment of the music but yes twitter fingers are aura napalm

frank would be fine if he didnt go nearly a f***ing decade with no music. also not showing up for/phoning in live performances. also making f***ing d*** jewelry.

Weeknd is your textbook fake mysterious nigga, before he let the shtick go, Frank just lives his life & exploits his hypebeast fandom, posts stories of himself doing random s***

Not only that but frank is also a textbook example of aura sustaining an artist even in the absence of anything else. If he dropped something tomorrow the internet would be set on fire even in spite of a disappointing last decade for him

I think he was authentically mysterious before he fully embraced his fame around 2015

No for a while I had one of my favorite artists blocked on Twitter loooool but that was when I actively used it in like 2017, 2018

I don't really use social media platforms to follow artists anymore but I guess Tyler's gotten a little obnoxious but I'm still driving to Ring Ring Ring so idc
