Saw a video today where Jay was speaking about warning everyone on Roc Nation in 02 that 50 Cent was coming. And it's long been speculated that a part of Jay's retirement in 04 was due to 50's rise to supe om. Then his unretirement coincided with 50's fall off.

50 Cent then had a very public fight in 07 against the man attempting to supplant him and his style of rap at the top of the game.

And we all know Kanye's very well documentated obsession with Drake replacing him and the conspiracy theories of sabotage on Drake's career. And the fact he's admitting to making Watch the Throne with Jay because he was feelling pressured by Drake's rise.

A burden of wearing the crown is the knowledge that one day someone younger will come to remove it from your head and the paranoia this brings. But we're in year 5 (at least) of Drake's reign and has there ever been a legit challenger? There's a few right now that might have the potential to remove him from his spot one day, but none of them are really close at the moment.

I don't think this says much about Drake though as much as it does about the generation that's come after him. Honestly, I think someone gettting hot enough to challenge him might actually lead to an uptick in quality. It's not a coincidence that what's generaly considered to be his best work was when he was fighting for the top spot (Take Care) and when he was trying to fend off Kendrick (NWTS and IYRTITL) and everything after people tend to call uninspired

Jay retiring over 50 is doo doo info. Stop. But no, and I hope people don't mention Tory cause that wasn't that

    Drake makes pop rap

No one is doing what’s he’s doing at his level. So, no. Drake put on Kendrick and rocky. But I think if we talking about pure rap and the art of it I think Kendrick was and maybe still is the only competition.

Both had followings’ but not stardom level and whether you accept it or not Drake gave them that stage.

Their numbers following that tour were higher than before Drake put them on his tour (Kendrick sold 5,000 first week with Section 80 and Rocky didn't even get placement on the Billboard Top 200). They didn't have "large" following they were both underground for years.

I think it'll comes down to (1) how well Drake can hold onto the populairty he has (2) if any other artist can overtake him in popularity.

The barrier to entry for artists is lower than ever in history, which gives everybody an opportunity to be heard.

However, that also creates massive competition out there. To hit mass appeal you're fighting against every other artist or genre of music that people may want to listen to or vibe with.

I think there are a few from this generation on the come up that have the potential if they worked for it, but don't think they've dethroned anyone yet.

If we look back at 2010 - 2013, we still had guys that were the top sellers that had been around from 10+ years, like Jay Z, Eminem, Kanye, Wayne.

At that time they were being challenged by the up & comers in terms of popularity, Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Nicki, Rocky, Wiz, Mac, etc.

Drake proved he could compete. Kenrick & cole showed they weren't far behind. Some others just didn't gain as much popularity. That's why so many discussions revolved around those 3 and who was the leader of the rap game.

I don't feel anyone from the newer generation has really shown, just yet, that they're taking the lead in terms of populairty or becoming the face of rap for the next 5-10 years.

The next few years will tell though!

so you saying they would’ve never gotten to the level they’re at without the drake tour?

No, I'm saying that the Drake tour and placement on Take Care helped their careers out and both have admitted that. Rocky went from a project not dropping to having the number 1 album in the world. Kendrick went from 5,000 copies sold to 242,000 copies sold. Both were following the Club Paradise Tour. He put them on.

I don't think there will ever be that big Jay Z, 50, Wayne, Drake level of rapper again. Drake's rise began at the very tail end of the mainstream media's (labels, radio, MTV/BET, etc.) hold on the status of gatekeepers for artists' success. Drake being on Rolling Stone, radio, MTV, award shows, placements on the established artists' albums, moving actual physical album units, it was all part of the traditional rollout the industry would plan out for someone they wanted to build. Drake has the infrastructure and sound/direction to stay on top of the mainstream rap scene, unlike Kendrick, who decided to take his artistic direction in a different turn after GKMC. Nowadays, anyone can release music, establish a niche/core audience, and tour and sell and be alright. Back then, the real chance at sustained and legitimate money came from blowing up like Drake did. Now, it's no longer necessary. And with more and more artists establishing themselves and becoming successful, and fans all over the world having more access to the wide array of artists coming out, it's too difficult to single out the ONE artist at the very top, because there's room for everyone.

Not sure this is how it happens, but I always thought the next "Drake-level" artist would come from Drake himself. I mean, Wayne was willing to make a pathway for Drake, and I feel like Drake would one day be willing to do the same, if for anything self-preservation. He could say that the industry or the fans didn't phase him out, he bowed out on his own terms and established his own successor. He knows what kind of work and infrastructure is necessary to cultivate the perfect storm of quality output and brand management. He could pass that on to an artist who, like he, benefited from that help out the gate, having the backing of Rap a Lot and Wayne and Cash Money.

I love Kanye but i never got why he was so paranoid about stuff like that, same for Drake idk WHY there is even need for paranoia

These guys really give af abt some ''crown'' being snatched from them. Honestly i do get it but then again i don't.

Just let the music speak for itself

Especially in Ye's situation, like this mf has one of the, if not the best discography in hiphop and he cared about ''Drake coming to replace him popularity wise''??? why

Kendrick and Rocky at a point were the only competition.

Whenever Kendrick drops, Drake gets nervous but nowadays they have different lanes and are kinda co-existing.

Drake is a pop rap act who might go down as the biggest rapper to ever do it when it comes to numbers.

While Kendrick is in the discussion of being the greatest Hip-hop artist of all time when its all said and done.

    And Rocky is just Rocky.

    HUH?

Nervous for what? Nervous about him outdoing Kendrick on every album and with every release? Nervous about being the most dominant rapper every year whether or not he drops an album? When has Kendrick EVER had a bigger year than Drake? When? What the f*** is this post?

Also, you're entirely stupid if you think Drake's only legacy is/will be numbers. VERY VERY STUPID.

Kendrick had a bigger year then Drake damn year every year he dropped

Unless you want to go with the numbers argument which is what Papi’s angels usually use as an argument

2012 GKMC a classic album that put Kendrick in a whole new conversation

2015 TPAB a all time classic album highly regarded and is in the discussion of being the greatest rap album of all
time. People compare it to even Illmatic.

2017 DAMN, wins a pulitzer which makes him the only rapper in history to do this. This year he beat Drake with numbers aswell.

2018, curated the soundtrack album for a MARVEL movie
