Something that didn’t dawn on me until now about all this “music/pop/hiphop/r&b is dead” kerfuffle is that there’s been a void of black male music that everyone loves. The pop is dead and r&b is dead discussions have been going on longer too - for as long as the void of black men became apparent. And to be very real, mainstream music has been dependent on black males for smash hits for a long ass time. So once hiphop, the last bastion of beloved crossover black male music, grew this same void, the public lost it.
Just a thought tho
I made a thread about something similar to this earlier in the year.
That it feels that male voices in hip hop has shrunk considerably
Especially this year. Feels like the driving force of music has been feminine energy.
I didnt include the whole racial aspect to it. But that definitely adds another angle to it as well.
Hip hop got milked by pop culture just like everything in america does we going thru a renaissance now (i hope)

I’ve been thinking this for a while too honestly

I didn’t mention Drake at all and he’s one guy. Yes Drake is a black artist

Wouldnt Drake's domination count as "Filling The Void" then?

It's complicated because Drake's current music isn't as crossover as his 2013-2018 music. It's more hip hop or trap focused these days barring HNVM.
It's still popular and does big numbers. Don't get it twisted. But he's not really tapping into the pop market as much as he used to.
He hasn't dropped a HOWGH, Hotline Bling, One Dance, In My Feelings, God's Plan, or Passionfruit level hit in a while. Tootsie Slide was arguably Drake's last true crossover hit that was just as big in pop culture as hip hop culture.
Abel is filling in the Pop/Crossover void more than Drake these days.
Hip-Hop has been b******ized to the point of no return 💅
Yeah it’s a wrap

On point.
He's way more of a gangster rapper now than the Crossover rap star that he first came into the game as.
Gone are the days where lead singles were Find Your Love, Marvin's Room, etc.
And it seems it's by choice. Because he can make those records and does, but carefully chooses to be a nigga
'Thought I was a pop star, I'm slaughter gang, I baited him'
If Hip-Hop has peaked,
so has entertainment as a whole.
Don't think it's peaked, it's great music happening every day. But I think society, in large part because of social media, has essentially decided to curate their own lives, which has lead to a decline in literally all forms of entertainment.
