I've noticed since i downloaded spotify for the first time in 2019, the way i listen to music changed. i have an itunes/local files library i've been building since 2012 and would listen to albums in full most of the time
this might be indicative of the rise of short form content too but i think ever since i got spotify, i would listen to songs on a playlist as opposed to songs from an album
i'm the process of consolidating my itunes library from old laptops i have and hopefully my music listening habits will change too
has anyone else had similar experiences?
It has changed in that I now completely disregard what critics say. When I was young I used to really give "amazing" albums more than one chance, forcing myself to like them and not listening to music I actually liked because it was "bad".
I used to listen to most new releases in genres i liked when i was a teenager and used to always look for New stuff to listen to
Im sad that i dont really do either of those anymore
Used to download everything. I would be on a broken french blogspot clicking dead rapidshare links spending days looking for a full flac discography that I was never gonna listen to. Just use Spotify now
relying on forums/blogs to mass download discographies
to
obsessively logging/discovering new music daily via rym
to
being so bored~overwhelmed with music/"event albums from every generation of artist in the past 3 years that i only listen to singles from entrenched favorites or give time of day to niche releases that seem promising / have enough buzz to catch my intrest

same
i would say this probably a very universal experiences for people on this site
Damn look what streaming did to you
no it fr has had a detrimental effect

I know. But it’s a choice. You can always go back.
I’m obviously still rocking the iPod.
i never got into the playlists thing. only time i use them is to skim them looking for new musicians to listen to albums from.
still only listen to albums.
my habits havent changed at all really.
still finding new music all the time, acquiring tastes for new things.
only thing thats different is when i would torrent all my music it was all saved in a folder, but i dont download or save any of the albums i look up in apple music, so i keep everything in my head. which makes me forget about a lot of good stuff probably.
i should start saving the albums i like lol

We're getting old
I don't listen to as much of it as I used to, at least repeatedly when it comes to albums.
I don't download everything now.
Don't care for critics like I did when I was younger. I'll check something out regardless of them, if an album or song seems interesting enough to me.
I search out for more obscure stuff now, even music with lyrics I don't quite understand.
everyone is like "I used to have to work for music but now I stream and my appreciation for music is now worse for it"
used to edit everything about a project cause on iTunes you used to be able to go into the metadata and cut off intros/outros to create more smoother transitions
used to edit the artist name so it’s grouped a specific way, alternate covers if I thought the present one was ass, checking this website called hiphopearly every morning before school to add all the new songs that day to my mp3 player, it’s how I first heard a lot of Drake/Ross/Ye music early in them late 00s
Now I’d say I listen to more music because of streaming and just add and hit play on the album top to bottom. usually only go to my playlists if I’m in the mood for certain vibes, at the gym, or my artist specific playlists

gotta love itunes
the fact it still works saves my life
everyone is like "I used to have to work for music but now I stream and my appreciation for music is now worse for it"
How can you be so annoying man
Now that i think about it, no. But i always playlisting since itunes pre streaming days but i feel it’s harder to find new quality music it’s just a bunch of random new s*** feel like there was more quality control before
we started with cd / radio in the house & outside
then with napster / limewire / bearshare mp3s Windows Media Player / Winamp & Realplayer
playing free MMO games with an early internet radio too
eventually
burning cds to play on s***ty headphones & 15-sec skip walmart cd players
then to 256mb walmart mp3 players
we got to Foobar 2k, blogspots & soulseek, my mom got me a more advanced mp3 player for christmas one year, but still not really a big name brand
big into last fm, still use it, & liked its internet algo-radio feature based on bands you liked
eventually got me a 128 gig ipod, still using stuff from apple buds to the coby gummy headphones, scrobbling with a peripheral plug in via Foobar somehow
eventually got on to smart phones & syncing to there
youtube from time to time
never gave up soulseek but got on streaming Spotify
used the radio function on there, listened to mostly albums, & liked songs playlist though
would go on discogs & browse their music database with genre combinations to find new things
read & listened to reviews
friend gave me a vinyl / bluetooth / cd / cassette player console in gradschool
bought vinyl, cds, tapes from time to time
was interested in music production so I bought aiaiai headphones & akg over ear headphones, but generally they were great to have
heard spotify sucked, imported all my last fm liked songs on there
also got Bandcamp, now 315 bought releases deep
was heavy on spotify, especially in the pandemic until the end of 2025, even had their Car Thing peripheral, but would take spare mp3 on my phone for times when I didnt have internet
did research on reddit for DAPs as I was getting tired of streaming / spotify
found a cool one that made sense for me (its an evangelion themed android based one with no internet on it without wifi)
bought the program Synfonium (really cheap really cool really custom really quality) with a 1 tb memory card
still filling it up. it's interesting how I'll randomly remember a song or a band & be like "we need them on here" then go download it, put it on there. listen to a few albums daily but mainly go on my Favorite Tracks playlist from place to place
bought like 400$ hi-fi in-ear monitors
use yt music on my phone since i pay for premium too from time to time, usually in the morning on my system or my samsung probuds2
love it

I would say I lean a bit towards this imo
I became a soundcloud junkie in 2020 and never looked back
Ion even have a spotify or apple muaic subscription rn
