I didn’t understand why this has a divisive reaction, and then I realized, “oh, people need to understand things”, and then it clicked

I don’t have much to say, and often that’s a reflection of how great a movie is
This is a soulful poem on mortality and legacy
    I ate it up

What a glorious year for animation it’s been
I’m glad I can be here with you all to enjoy it

this might be the best "final statement on a career" type movie ive ever seen its really spurred me go on a miyazaki lore deep dive now

nah not at all, all that was crammed into the last 15 minutes literally. the wind rises is a far better coda than this film could ever have hoped to be

This movie left me speechless after I saw it in a good way. Then I start processing it later and I’m like holy f***. It’s a movie that also rewarding when you do a rewatch

Nausicaa is easily one of his better early movies, really strong world building

The manga is apparently leagues better and has a pretty nihilistic ending

If this is true, I get it. I think he processed something deeply throughout the creation of the boy and the heron, now he views ip differently and perhaps this opens up his other worlds to more sequels, made by others at ghibli or even multiple by this man because he seems like he’ll never stop feeding us at this point. A nausicaa sequel would be so beyond hype but I can’t get too invested until we get more concrete stuff also did the film nausicaa cover all the events of the manga? or is there more to the story already for him to work with?

I loved the design, but I hated the dialogue and protagonist

She just came across as your standard boring, and soullessly plucky heroine

Not really, her whole motivation stems from protecting her kingdom, and being interested in the outside world early on. In fact it’s interesting Miyazaki doesn’t result to the trope of her parents (king) keeping her hidden from some truth about the outside since they’re protected from the spores

This was so great. Amazing visuals gracing a very personal narrative that spoke to Miyazaki's own anxieties about his legacy and the world at large. Pulled no punches, didn't hold our hands through any aspect of the story.

I watched the dub with my daughter, and the voice acting was generally fine, but I'm looking forward to diving into some interpretations of the film and watching the sub by myself

First watch was too much to process and 1st hour kind of slow but 2nd and 3rd watch / seeing theories it all clicked

  • Finally watched this, what more can i say.
I was confused as to why they went with "the boy and the heron" for the western title, now im baffled. Im sorry but "how do you live" worked so much better with the context of the movie, its more powerful and evocative of its message, its cooler and more memorable.
About the film itself, i never felt this with miyazaki's films but while im sure i love iy, im still left speechless, thinking about it and its themes, the various metaphors and interpretations ive given throughout the experience, my final thoughts on it and pondering about miyazaki's career.
I dont know man, i will watch it again to connect some dots and come to a conclusion.
Just like the wind rises, if this is miyazaki's final work it'd be a perfect end to his career

  • Remembering how miyzaki said he dedicated the film to his grandson and now im tearing up
