It solves the 'Chekhov's gun' issue with Sam repeatedly showing us Nate with the gun only for him to just... barely threaten him with it? Like what was the point of repeatedly showing us the gun and Nate getting more drunk? There was no payoff for all of that drama.

Also why would Cal shoot Nate?! He loves Nate. He wasn't even mad that he turned him in, the only part of Cal's life that has been shown to be out of control is his sexuality, and it's the only part of his life where he acts impulsively.

There's been nothing to suggest that he's capable of shooting his son, who he loves. The only time he got out of control was when his sexuality was exposed, and even then, after his outburst, his solution was to create a new situation where he can be in control again.
