George has always said he likes his characters to be morally grey, and I think the writers are doing a phenomenal job with keeping that energy

They are doing better than D&D in those aspects.
D&D made characters like Tyrion and Bronn more likable each season because they were fan favorites, but I don't see the HOTD writers intentionally making any of these characters likable just for the sake of having someone good to root for
