The upcoming second season of HBO’s House Of the Dragon will consist of eight episodes, two fewer than Season 1 of the Critics Choice Award-winning Game Of Thrones prequel, Deadline has learned. It is part of a long-term plan for the show, which includes HBO mulling a green light for a third season, I have learned.

The news comes as production is about to begin on Season 2 in the UK for a likely summer 2024 premiere.
In what is a relatively common practice, HBO did not reveal the episode order in the Season 2 renewal announcement last summer. I hear the initial plan was for another 10-episode arc, which eventually changed, leading to some script rewrites. Given the leadership change at HBO’s parent company, some pointed at Warner Bros. Discovery leadership’s focus on cost-cutting. But sources close to the production stressed that the Season 2 episode count trim was story-driven.

It has been reported that House of the Dragon’s creative team had envisioned the series running for 3 or 4 seasons. I hear executive producer/showrunner Ryan Condal, working with author/executive producer George R.R. Martin, took a step back as Season 2 was being put together to take a big-picture view of the series, which follows Martin’s Fire & Blood, and figure out the overall narrative flow, including how to break up the stories season-to-season and what battles to include and when.

As part of that, I hear Season 3 has been mapped out and may be greenlighted with HBO seriously considering committing to moving ahead with scripts, casting and a production plan as the network too is trying to think long-term instead of season-to-season.

Summer 2024 damn. I'm happy about how much quality TV we get with streaming these days..but its rough that it generally takes so much longer between seasons

They should just film it all back to back to back. F*** this “we haven’t greenlit season 3 yet” bullshit. Green light all 4 seasons and film them all in a year

rewatching GOT since the series finale. Left such a bad taste I didn't watch House of Dragons but I will once I finish the show again.

Really such a shame at the drop off in quality but I'm curious to see how they managed this show.

Bad phrasing on my part. I just meant GOT in general. Once the show was done I didn't want anything to do with it considering how they fumbled the last season.

Seasons 1-3 are top tier heat and seeing them again reminds me of what could have been.

House of the Dragon takes a lot of inspiration from the very early days of GOT

If you enjoy all of the early GOT scenes from season 1 and 2 of characters just sitting around and talking and plotting their political moves, you’ll enjoy this show

Glad House of Dragons goes back to some roots as you say. But also glad they actually have material to work with. That's truly this univeres biggest detriment.

The books not being finished is hilarious to me. They never will be finished.

Personally I love season 6, it’s full of iconic moments . And season 5 was still enjoyable for me although it’s a very noticeable step down from season 4. But I think the show was still among the best on TV for the majority of it’s run

I absolutely don’t think Dream of Spring will be finished, but I’m still staying optimistic about Winds releasing

Mind you it's been years since I've seen any of the seasons. I've only ever really watched the whole show once. Some of the stuff I forget truly but the drop in writing quality was very noticeable.

The show was truly in an event and I always came back every season but again it's why it hurts bit that it just couldn't end strongly.

The White Walker conclusion will forever be my biggest gripe. Basically the whole show every season centered around this looming presence and it was over so fast. All the tension created of an all out war between the the white walkers and Westeros just killed in one swift moment. They're in the very first scene we see of the show.
Season 8 should have been 10 eps. They rushed it so hard.
