YANDHIDid they really tho? Aegon is a chess piece who's just supposed to listen to Otto and Alicent and whoever they hired to be around him. Otto's the original problem
Also Viserys (the king) was Aegon's father. The king had a chance to raise his sons, but neglected and did not place Aegon as heir.. Alicent can only do so much especially when she was just a teenager nudged by her dad to seduce Viserys. Tbf also Viserys is one of the worst possible templates for being a king so this was always going to be a disaster somehow
I read somewhere that one of the writers was like the reason aegon was neglected by viserys was because the only reason he had him was to replace the son he lost with aemma, and that void just couldn’t be filled like that
And His mom views him more as a burden that “ruined” her life than as a son. And don’t even get me started on Otto.

If he knew that Viserys didn't want Aegon to be his heir then he doesn't really care about the realm.

It’s because of the writing
Aemond might be cooler but he’s a shallow character
With Aegon we see all of his flaws and we can see why he is the way he is. You can see him struggling to figure things out and we can wonder if he can.
