Don and Keem both only doing 65k for all their hype is proof that hiphop culture has only gotten more insulated since corona started

I think it’ll take a few years before we see new artists doing 100k+ FW on their debuts

    wdym by insulated?

The mainstream crossover zeitgeist that we saw with artists like Migos or Post Malone in 2017 was totally hampered by COVID killing this intermingling of people of all different types

It’s really not a hiphop thing but most pop culture is now far more insulated because people are simply not in the same places anymore. If people are gonna go out, it’s gonna be a place where everyone’s doing the same thing so they’re most secure in health, but it ends up affecting cultural interaction too

  • Oct 13, 2021

Like during COVID people would grow apart from old friendships and consolidate places where there’s common ground

    What happens socially, follows culturally

u could argue it’s isn’t completely insulated thanks to artists with consistent sales such as Olivia rodrigo, doja cat, youngboy etc. however, there has been some insulation

I’d say each f these artists are the exact proof of insulation

Absolutely no one who isn’t already a YB fan was gonna check this album,

Same with Doja, same with ORod

There’s no sense of trying to appeal to a wider crowd but instead they’re looking to consolidate in areas where they’re most likely to find core fanbase

This is why it’ll be even less common to see sub genres of rappers coming together to collaborate as time goes on. You won’t see Westside Gunn do something with like Baby Keem, even though only 6-7 years ago Migos were hopping on an Alchemist beat.

It’s this sort of fracturing that was inevitable but is only accelerating post COVID

I agree with everything besides the artists being proof of insulation
