Think how many exciting debuts there were throughout the 2010s? Nonstop barrage of artists finally getting their first chance in the spotlight

compared to now and honestly the only ones I think you can call strong or touched down hard were Pop Smoke’s SFTSAFTM and Don Toliver’s Heaven or Hell… 4 years ago

There’s still been fun debuts in the R&B and pop spheres but for rap i’m struggling to come up with anything new, closest would have to be Yeat’s 2Alive but that’s not quite on the level

Would you consider The Melodic Blue a strong album?

Its decent overall with some highlights but nah i wouldnt as whole body of work.

    Its not bad tho.

Main thing imo is that albums in the modern (in the more mainstream) it just feels like a collection of songs of whatever quality without much of a whole idea behind it.

Keem is one tho I think that has potential of a great album, have his goofy and hard songs on the album with another good chunk of more "deep" or "real" songs such as his interlude on MMBS & Hooligan.

But overall Rap of today just feels aimless & stagnant without much "thought", but not everything has to be "deep" - although I also feel even the hard/party songs/albums of today that ive listened too that are more mainstream just feel like snapshots when album/projects from "non-deep" rappers of the 2010s and back a good chunk still had an overall idea & point.

Such as Ferrari Boyz by Gucci & Flocka, few of Future's tapes/albums, Chief Keef early career, YG etc. & these "non-deep" artists were still doing their own unique sound(s) & feeling while still having an overall point/idea/goal.

Rap just feels stuck and in the mud. Rap feels like its just talking to be talking.

    There's no backbone & there's no direction.

    Imo, and its sad.

Regardless if something is introspective, street, party etc. most of rap (besides a few outliers every now and then of course) still felt like it had a point and a purpose. While now a lot of it, again, just feels hollow & running in circles. Not even just sound wise, but again, the projects & artists themselves as well.

Regardless what people say about the heavy trap representation of 2010s or the soundcloud "sound", most of it still had an identity & feel to it wether you were a fan or not.

I dont get it - mainstream & borderline wise.

Teezo’s album is one of my favourites especially with the bonus songs but that’s more r&b/rock

A debut from an artist is suppose to make a statement, especially a debut from a rap artist, but that hasn't happened in a long time. 100% has to do with how labels perceive new talent, their not spending any money on them to drop a big production.

Their gonna drop whatevers in their hard drives as an album and keep it moving, the talent/ambition of these artist are low, so the budget is low

I don't think things things are exclusive to hip hop tbh. They can be applied to all forms of current media and entertainment. I think it's a byproduct of consumption culture getting out of hand plus the fact that we're all more disconnected than we've ever been

  • You don’t have much organic development anymore because anyone that has talent and/or can ride the wave of what’s popular blows up instantly. My generation really was the last one that had that luxury because the internet/social media hasn’t been fully realized

Let's remember too that Thank Me Later and S80 are Drake and Kendrick's actual debut albums.
