we are never getting that unanimous classic ever again because our society simply isn’t built like that anymore

we will keep falling deeper and deeper into niche subgenres without any big stars to look at

His albums are poorly received by the critics and certain media outlets and of course rap nerds yet nearly everyone listens to them, enjoys them, and consistently revisits them

I just feel like credit needs to be given where it’s due, if the culture consistently listens to something and thinks it amazing then chances are it’s amazing

The narrative needs to start changing because it’s been going on way to long now

acting like we are never getting a widely agreed on classic album again is crazy. part of it is overstating the "monoculture" of the past imo, i think it's easier to look back on certain cultural phenomenons and think of them as totally unanimous when we weren't actually there to experience them. it's too overgeneralizing imo and falls into the trap of thinking the cultural icons and movements of a particular time were the only thing that defined it and having an overly stereotypical image of these eras.

yes its true that there are more options of music available to choose from, I don't think that means that all listeners are just going deeper into their own niche. the average casual music listener is just finding their music via social media, algorithms etc. (still word of mouth too) and these sources aren't exactly giving them all wildly different artists/songs

I agree that it's more fragmented now but I think to act like there are no more shared big cultural experiences is false and exaggerating the amount of classics had total unanimity in the past anyway. as long as music, movies, w/e are still hugely popular there are going to be works that are looked back on over time as outstanding in quality, popularity, and influence. every era just looks different. even if we don't agree, the new generations that rise up re going to have their own touchstones

I don’t fw CLB like that but HNM and Her Loss were both amazing

i revisit both more frequently than any other album from last year

I was kinda on the “monoculture is dead? 🤔 “ point long ago but this is where I’m at now personally. I think it also stems back to a collective inclination to credit every cultural movement/change/phenomenon to some grand osmosis…when sometimes s*** is simple and in a vacuum lol

This is just an isolated down period at most - if anything - rather than some big sign that monoculture is “dead”

Yup. Sad times. I hate how in this era, when an album I really love, one that ticks the boxes of what a “classic” is for me, drops, I'm almost guaranteed to see half the internet calling it mid.

When I used to get that “classic” feeling in the past, I was usually on point, and the culture and critics were on the same page.

Agreed. An album like Scaring the Hoes for example would have been unanimously called a classic on KTT years back but idk I still think 2018 in general needs to be studied as the year things changed. I can’t put my finger on exactly why but it was that year I noticed the shift

Well look, Gambino was praised back then too. Something happened where mfs just didn’t like albums that pushed the genre anymore and now it’s called “redditcore” when mfs don’t make trap or anything popular sounding

Yup. Sad times. I hate how in this era, when an album I really love, one that ticks the boxes of what a “classic” is for me, drops, I'm almost guaranteed to see half the internet calling it mid.
