I'd say the world we once knew is dying while a new world emerges. One that is very much alive. Both worlds are visible. This reflects in hip-hop

    *After watching

The internet aka metaverse has become our new 3rd place. Roblox, Twitter, Discord etc. Even ktt has become a bite sized 3rd place. That is the new world that's emerging and it obviously doesn't replace physical 3rd places. He's right about streaming and algorithmic content and a&rs not in it for the art killing the content itself especially for music. The real question to answer in order to move forward is how to best approach community building both digitally and physically and injecting humanity into a world with tech and social + business practices that make it easy to become individualistic and artificial. In this new, inevitable, already emerged, emerging world we need to find a way for us as a whole to remain human no matter what.

I think he's right @ 10:00. I will listen to an artist or a genre, then I go search for a new artist, and click radio to see music that sounds similar and the radio station is filled with the same artists I was just listening to. I feel like that works for most people, but me personally I hate it. I want to discover new artists, but instead these algorithms create a bubble around me giving me artists I already know and like.

I honestly don't get the point of "Discover Weekly" if it's just a compilation of music from all of my playlists. What's there to discover?

Youtube Essay Video Title: The Company that Changed Gaming Forever

1 minute in: Nintendo is a Japanese game developer known for the Mario franchise and many other beloved characters. But where did it all begin?

5 minutes in: Donkey Kong marked a rapid departure from strict platforming style gameplay.

30 minutes in: With Japan's economic boom period coming to a close, and domestic competitors like Sony entering the market, Americans found nativist alternatives.

55 minutes in: As capitalism alienates us from each other while global warming eats away the ice caps, we begin to realize there is no escape. You can't go backwards. But you can take old friends with you. "It's a me, Mario!"

haven’t watched yet but I kinda had the thought a minute ago like “what if 90’s-2010’s ish media landscape was just for that era”

I’d venture people whose media consumption prime was the 70’s - early 90’s felt that way about the past 30 years. Same for the 50’s - 70’s people towards people from the 70’s-90’s

A lot of things that cant be replicated outside of the actual talent and thinking process of these new artists. Also impending world wars, financial crisis, technology like social media and AI changing things

whoevers saying hip hop is dying in any way should not be listened to, its either aging millenials or people that think one slow year = dying genre

A lot of what he says is true for many people, but I'm grateful that it isn't true for me.

In LA I have a third place full of musicians and music fans, many of whom I have meaningful relationships with outside of that setting and we all share new music with each other. I don't rely on streaming algorithms and only tap into them as a curiosity. I make music and am engaged with finding new music. And yes, I have a job and a very active social life. Music is just a major priority for me.

I do sacrifice things though. I haven't watched a new TV series in over a year. I basically took the fall off from watching any new movies, but I've caught up recently now that I'm on winter break. I don't read as much as I should.

It's all about how you prioritize your time. Nothing about the way music engagement is currently set up prevents someone from discovering new music effectively. There are SO many effective tools out there. But those tools do encourage laziness and when people want to settle for what they know, it's easier than ever to do so.

i get what ur saying. within the patrickcc audience tho i dont think that term has much prior knowledge

but i do wonder like. when tf am i supposed to have time for said third place. as an indie musician i dont make enough money to quit my day job but i make enough that i consider it a real job too. does that make music my third place kinda by default? i gotta go to work then do some music s*** then i finally go home
