I feel like they cared then because it was two top rappers dropping on the same day and they both played up the competition.

But I dont think I've ever actually had a conversation about album sales or billboard with anyone irl. It seems like a strictly online thing. Like if im talking music w friends were listening/sharing music or we're debating it. But I've never seen anyone talk about sales until I got on here in like 2015

Jay-Z and 50 both played a big hand in it in the early 2000's.

Jay-Z kept bringing up sales and popularity during the beef with Nas and Prodigy. And he admitted on Moment of Clarity that he dumbed down his music to double his dollars on his "retirement" album.

And 50 is very obvious. A lot of niggas don't even know that 50 used to have a whole series on Youtube where he would have skits clowning other rappers for their low sales. He stopped the series after BISD barely outsold Deeper Than Rap though lol.

2000's had limited access to sales numbers and limited forums.

But, on SOHH and other rap forums, Jay-Z and G Unit stans used to bring up sales all the time to discredit the rappers they beefed with.

Whenever someone said Nas was better than Jay, niggas would bring up Hov's sales and radio hits or his wealth to claim that he's the better rapper.

G-Unit stans also had a field day on SOHH when Fat Joe's album right after the beef flopped like crazy.

Of course, SOHH is now defunct so those threads can't be found anymore but there's been plenty of sales talks back then. It's just that the info and forums were more limited.

You didn't have s*** like "Chart-data" on Twitter that'll hand you the chart info right away like you have today.
