Ever since so far gone drake tried to put many sounds together in one project and that caused the album to sound a lil messy more often than not. After all, Drakes whole formula is the mixture of rnb and rap which is especially tough considering the hard opinions some hip hop heads hold towards this mixture. This was never really a huge problem for me and many others, almost every project of his still came around to being at least good or most of the time even great. This ain’t really a critique but more of an observation.
With Take Care, NWTS and IYRTITL he managed to follow some kind of formular but even those three projects seemed to have some songs that many hip hop heads would end up calling "filler". I personally think IYRTITL is probably the most cohesive project drake had so far but it’s length hurts that cohesiveness a little bit. You can clearly hear that drake has gotten too big after that and tried to please every part of his fanbase with at least one song on the following projects. Every drake project since then has felt more like a playlist till now. And i feel like drake was very aware of this especially after views when he even resorted to calling more life a playlist. That idea of an album has become the standard for drake albums. I was mad surprised when CLB didn’t have a "Jaded" type song and noticed that i even felt like that sound was missing cause i got so used to him fulfilling these many different expectations.
I think this is the key to why so many people dislike drake albums on their first listens or even first few months with the album. They have a favorite type of drake and expect him to deliver exactly that drake on every album. The clearest example of this is the IYRTITL fans aka typical hip hop heads expecting hard rapping on every single drake album and for him to reinvent his flows and rapping all over again like he did on that project. It feels like this type of drake fan is the most present on hip hops internet bubble so the hate once he drops feels enormous even tho sales speak a different language and many people irl seem to be more than pleased.
Honestly, Nevermind is his first completely cohesive body of work that’s telling a coherent story sound wise. The outro with 21 might seem off but i honestly think it fits perfectly at the end just like bound 2 did on yeezus. With this house sound drake chose the experimental route compared to any of his other releases and thus so to speak didn’t meet most expectations that were built within the few hours between announcement and release. I think that’s the reason why this is his most controversial release yet even though he finally gave the critics what they always wanted from him, he switched it up and gave us something completely different. He definitely delivered an album that sounds rather like the classic interpretation of what an album is supposed to be like, leaving the playlist concept behind. The songs grip into each other with nice transitions and the intro serves no purpose but to introduce the second track. This is his first "Album" Album, one genre, one sound and the cohesive line up of 14 unique songs.
I beg y’all to let lose of the idea of drake that you have in your head rn n just open up to this new body of work because it’s an amazing sounding album with classic potential. Imo there’s not more than one skip on this thing and listening in full was never that fun with a drake album. Summer is here for the first time since 2019, let’s make this a big one.
man shut up
People have 101 reasons to like or dislike music and some of them are as simple as not being in the right mood or mind frame.
But only good music is gonna last…all that other BS…
I like the album. Not love. Not too 5 Drake project. Not even top 7. But I’m more a fan of rapping Drake or vibey sad Drake (jaded, Marvin’s room, etc)
This was def a dance album but I think it still fell well short of his dance jams (Blem, Madiba Riddim, Too Good, etc). I agree he gets points for cohesion. Just wish it was better music
Edit: I’ll say I wish it was better in the sense of my own bias of what I like from Drake. Most the homies were disappointed I talked to. Most of the chicks too but they still posted their favorite songs on their stories and will prob shortly have pics up with captions of lyrics from the album 😂

Thematically cohesive =/= Best
/thread
trying too hard to be different, it literally just came out
just sharing my thoughts
this is drake's 808's and yeezus. relatively lean tracklist, focused, consistent sound, and very divisive. some fans may never like this album and that's fine
@op Thanks for writing that up, well put. Can't wait to play this for the rest of summer

me too brother, appreciate it
Now only if Drake does this but with a rap album
"A classic is just 10 of these"
So give us the 10 sir. You just gave these dance b******s 13 songs. Give us 10 tracks of ignorant raps and witty bars! and slide a controlla/one dance at the end for s***s and giggles
