As a 30 year old who was 20 when this s*** dropped, I can tell you (and I know there will be others who will know what it was like at that time) that this tape was F***ING SPECIAL AS HELL. We went through some stale years of R&B tbh, imo, then I saw this tape doing the rounds on DatPiff and I was like “wtf, is this a band or???”

Then it got to Wicked Games and I was like.... wow. This is the future of the genre. This is what R&B should be for the coming decade. Who is the mysterious ass guy with a name like a band?

Immediately texted all my bros and my gf at the time to listen to this s***. My best friend was like “WTF - this is amazing” and we actually met up later that day just to listen to it again and talk about it in my car. I don’t think he listened to anything else for the next 4 months at that point

My gf was like “meh - it’s ok, but it’s just like a MJ copy who swears” - she is now an ex btw

I remember feeling the MJ comparisons on a visceral level though on the real. I was a crazy Michael fan from the age of 5 (still am) and struggled to cope with his death. I remember finding this tape and this mysterious new artist a huge breathe of fresh air and something to fill the void.
