I've been listening to a lot of Aaliyah recently and this question popped up

This track was on Chris Brown's "X" album:

I always thought it was interesting how Chris Brown could clear Aaliyah vocals for his album but Drake and 40 couldn't do this back in 2011

This track was supposed to be on the 40 x Aaliyah album:

What kind of pull does Chris Brown have that Drake doesn't?

Maybe the fact that they wanted a whole albums worth of clearance is why they blocked it? Pretty f***ing weird

OVO couldn't even get the one song in OP cleared though. They had to release it for free

Yeah. He def went about it the wrong way. Should’ve done a song or two paid his respects and kept it at that

are you sure 40 couldn’t get it cleared ? iirc they thought the aaliyah album was in bad taste and got some public pushback from it so they dead it.

Aaliyah’s estate told Drake to f*** off basically. Said he had no right to associate himself so closely to her (DMX said this). This was during NWTS or maybe prior when he was supposedly working on a whole project for her.

Drake goes about clearances weird, it’s off putting to some people. James Blake talked about trying to collab with drake, but they ended up just sampling some of his old vocals and using them however they wanted.

That's cold. Drake even tatted Aaliyah's face on him

What Aaliyah’s legacy needs is her discography on streaming services. That will inspire a new generation of artists and producers to make new music inspired by her. Drake tried to carry the load himself though and I respect that.
