Lots of rock stars and even folk and pop can still tour (and to a lesser extent, chart) with age. Paul Simon did 3 nights at the Hollywood Bowl during his farewell tour in 2018. Guns N Roses is doing Fenway Park on their tour this summer. Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, probably even The Who can still do arenas

DMX, even in the wake of his recent death, did 32k or so first week. Aside from Jay and Eminem, can any legacy rappers still fill arenas? It’s very odd how people like Nelly and Luda and even Ice Cube who were once huge couldn’t sell more than 30k first week today and can probably not do large venues

EDIT: TOP 10 GLOBAL TOURS OF 2019

    1. P!nk - $215.2 million
    2. Elton John - $212 million
    3. Ed Sheeran - $211.7 million
    4. Metallica - $179 million
    5. The Rolling Stones - $177.8 million
    6. BTS - $170.3 million
    7. Bon Jovi - $134.2 million
    8. Ariana Grande - $118.3 million
    9. Michael Bublé - $115.8 million
    10. Fleetwood Mac - $112.2 million

cuz most of the time, rappers arent the ones responsible for whole eras of pop culture. that didnt start until recently. Eminem and Jay can cuz well they managed to reach those heights

    They were more talented

like look at the career of rolling stones and how they worked in the industry vs Ludacris

  • Jun 16, 2021

Because it's the "playlist spam" era. That's why there is 25 track albums with only 3 popular songs on it

Rap is still a relatively new genre so stars like Jay/Em/Kanye maintaining popularity musically at their age is uncharted waters

Music and fashion are commodities largely premised on their novelty. They are also bigger as commercial trades than the individual personalities which populate them. Like models, a musician's high status career only lasts as long as their profitability. To stay relevant is a lot tougher than becoming relevant in the first place. Even if they keep up to date with the dominant sound, they could lose their commercial push.

Of course, some artists become so big that the entire system might have a vested interested in some of them remaining relevant. Some artists even become part of that larger industry by starting their own labels or streaming services or working with them as mutuals rather than content creators. The algorithms which gatekeep music now probably are stabilized music as a whole to some extent. It's like the radio was. If you just keep presenting the largest swath of people with whatever you prescribe, you will create an audience. Selecting the biggest artists over and over is a no brainer.

Rap is a bit of a youth culture. music / entertainment in general is but especially in rap it's rare to have a shelf life of more than 2-3 years of success before the fans get tired of you and move on

This is crazy. So many of these acts peaked in popularity decades ago. Rap is a young genre, but it seems like it won't have longevity like other genres for individual success

Certain artists will Drake for example

Remember these are high earning tours because their fans are older and have money to blow or they are pop

Couple of different factors could be the reason.

Rap is still new and growing. Legacy acts aren't as appreciated due to rap being a young man's game.
