i feel so conflicted on mandatory stuff. on one hand, the students def need the practice and ik 80% of them wouldn't do it if it wasn't required, but it's so f***ed to make people, many of whom are working and/or have mental health issues work so hard every week :(

why not have homework due the day before the test. So it gives them time to do it. My teacher also makes us do a practice test and if you dont get a 70% or more (unlimited tries), youre not able to take the test.

    i appreciate the suggestion!

in regards to your other quote, I'm not a big fan of the format of the class, I'd prefer to spend more time with the students to help them, but i don't have a choice.

in regards to hw, i don't have a choice with the deadlines. that's a great thought, i feel conflicted on it because many students (myself included) would wait until the last week to do the hw. they also have a quiz every week due the day after the hw. as i'm not an asshold i extend both the quiz and hw for any reason as long as the students reach out. i require the reaching out so that they can stay connected to me in some capacity

As a professor would it look bad on you if a majority of your class had all passing grades? Would your superiors deem your lesson plan too easy?

oh you teaching college, if this was hs I f***in hated that daily homework s***. like bruh I already had other teachers giving me hw everyday, chill on that

but since this is college, just having an assignment+quiz due in one week is pretty chill.

hmm math class. interesting. if I have to watch videos / pre made lectures... I just watch that s*** at 2x speed.

I know most students aren't used to online/hybrid classes and prefer being in a classroom. personally, I've always tried taking as many online classes since I started college 3 years ago. I just find it easy to self teach myself and follow a syllabus.

the best teachers / professors Ive had always made class very involving. working together, group work, doing the homework in class, going over it in class. just building up to a quiz / test where most of it was exactly the stuff you did in class / homework. hated those teachers who would put some wack ass s*** on the final that we never went over in class! f*** em!

just don't make participation mandatory, its nice to have it as extra credit cause some students are honestly terrified / uncomfortable with it.

Since you think they aren’t watching the videos it may help them if before they came to class you had written down the main points or steps from the lecture on the board

That way when you start doing practice problems they can look at the board and not be entirely lost

idk about majority, but if almost everyone did then I might get in trouble. Fortunately, due to the labor dynamics of teaching, there wouldn't be any real consequences for me. they'd probably say i was too nice, they say that already about me lol.

in regards to the actual passing of students, its an awkward situation. on one hand a lot of students won't be able to learn the material well enough to succeed in their next class so I probably shouldn't pass them, on the other a lot of time there's reasons why they didn't do so. without exposing anyone's personal information i'm teaching at a university mostly attended by students from working class families - meaning that almost everyone is working 10-20 hours a week, let alone stuff like mental health or physical illness messing with their ability to succeed in the class. i have no doubt most of the students who don't do well will not personally be at fault

are the videos of people on YouTube or of you that you recorded yourself. My math professor gives us videos but they're like 40 mins each and theres like 5 of them. So I dont watch them. However, he records HIS lectures tho and I prefer watching those over the videos he gives us

they're 4-5 minute videos that are interactive. there are other videos they can optionally watch. I haven't made any of them currently but i'd like to start

Biggest advice I can give you OP is to keep doing what you’re doing, I feel as if more professionals in areas who hold the opportunity to help others (be it teachers with their students, a medical professional with their patients or a manager to his employees) should be like you. By just listening and being compassionate of your students life and mental health is more than enough. Good luck tho!

It’s nice to see professionals on KTT and I hope to see more.

People hate trigonometry but I thought it was the easiest. You literally just have to memorize the equations and you’re set.
It seems you have a lazy group of kids.
The poll is definitely counter productive. I say you randomly pick students to answer the questions yourself.
You are the teacher, you have all the power. If they don’t want to learn, it’s their problem and they’ll get a low mark
