What's your career and how did you choose it? College students can say major and high school can say what they want to be and why.
I don't have a career, I do the things I want to do that earn me money
career is a dirty word to me, I don't like being put in that kind of box
my career is being me
Degree- social work
Career- I commission into the army as an officer in less than 1.5 years now. College junior
Reason- I wanted to live a non ordinary life honestly. Up until I joined rotc I was a pretty boring dude who didn’t have much confidence in myself. Best decision I ever made, though it does suck at times. Also I wanted to graduate college with no debt, and lead people. My only obligation rn is a weekend a month and I get my college paid for, rent paid, etc.
@op how you like a&t so far tho
Once I got close to graduating high school, I took a look at possible majors that seemed interesting to me. After attending several university classes where high school students are encouraged to visit to see if the courses are anything for them, I eliminated those majors that did not seem suitable to me at all. Next to that, I also scratched off anything off my list where the job prospects did not seem all that great. Ultimately, I set upon my path and got my Master's degree. Now, I am 6 months into my career.

"career is a dirty word to me" broke ass
I chose a career that gave me the best chance of making a lot, paying my student loans off and retiring early.
I’m just a naturally gifted writer so I was able to get good job doing it on complete cruise control

I mean my dream is still to be a musician and I’ll keep fighting hard for that. Right now I am the director of content for an ad agency that’s pretty successful, And I really like how it allows me to be creative with what I come up with. If I do stay in the writing field, I think that music journalism is my goal, But writing these ads pays way better and I’m so young for my position that I’m probably gonna end up in it for some time

do you still have enough time to make your music dream a reality? like building connections and working with other people on the come up, building a brand? I feel like its good you got something you'd be content with doing though, most other people its either music or fast food shifts.

its a balence of, how do you make the most money, and how do you do it in a way thats fun, that ur good at and that you feel proud of instead of guilty at the end of the day.
you don't gotta "pick a career" unless you trap yourself, just do some s*** and you can give up and do some other s*** if you dont like it anymore or find something better.
tbh i tell people, develop your dreams. do that stupid s*** you really wanna do but like you know it wont work out, do it till you like really realize its s***, or you find a way to pivot. Dont ignore your dreams man, live em and youll see why they where s*** dreams, youll get more mature and profitable dreams.
aint no harm being broke in 5 years from now if u fail a few times at first, but if u end up in debt and trapped then you're f***ed for a real long time.
EDIT: oh s*** didnt realize ur talkin bout picking a major lol, thats a tough choice. I make robots, but only cuz i used to wanna write software then got bored of it lol. Get a degree you both could work in, and could pivot from easily.
i didnt choose my career
my career chose me
Was Literally about to say the same thing smh 🤦♂️
I was too f***ed on d**** when I was a teenager to focus on school. Barely graduated, then I had to leave home right after with no money, so I got a job washing dishes at a restaurant. Worked my fingers to the bone for a while and now I'm a chef.

Doing something I enjoyed at the time and was talented at, graphic design. I was doing logos, photoshop art etc before I finished school and all my teachers pointed me in that direction. The problem is I didn't look to heavily into the career pathway which I found to be limiting once you get a few years in, with little room for pay growth and most roles being at a similar level. Looking back I wish I did something more flexible and just got a more generic degree like I.T. or really specialised into something more interesting. I think like other posters have stated, considering your degree as your entire career is a bad mindset, and I'm currently at a crossroads of figuring what to transition into next cos my current job is going nowhere.
