I don’t mean when movies play with more than 1-timeline throughout like Oppenheimer or Social Network. More so when majority of the movie is in present and then they show a quick 5 minute or so flashback here or there to give exposition.

I noticed I only like it when some type of funny/intriguing commentary is involved. Like the scene in Good Time when Buddy is talking about how he ended up in the hospital. Or “Sexy beast” when they’re discussing the job and showing flashbacks of how it came about.

Or OUATIH when Leo is talking to Al about his past movies and Al is being animated about them. Hell even Hateful 8 when Sam is talking about how he got head from dudes son and killed him lol.

I actually seem to dislike dramatic flashbacks when they throw something in to showcase what happened to the character as a kid, to explain why they are who they are or whatever.

I know the stigma people have against flashbacks but I find it to be overblown. Like anything in film there’s a way to do it well where it’s earned and way to do it cheaply where it feels thrown in.

Like the flashback in Edward Scissorhands & Toy Story 2 are exactly what you say you dislike, a showcase of what happened to them in the past to explain why they are who they are and they’re considered standout scenes in their respective movies.

I don’t remember Edward and didn’t see a flashback in the clip you linked unless I missed something.

And the Toys story one is done in a creative way.

    I’ll give an example:
I loved top gun maverick but hated how they would throw in flashback scenes of the first movie. Even tho they weren’t long, I didn’t need them to explain “hey this is his son!!! Look they playing the piano the same!!”

  • That Good Times flashback is too iconic

I feel the same way about flashbacks as I do about flashforward scenes: I'm in as long as the show or film gives the scenes a really good purpose. Doesn't even need to be flashy or fancily edited, but as long as the intent is clear, I'm in. The exception to this is David Lynch. He can go nuts, and I won't complain.

The Edward clip is a flashback that comes near the end to show how he got the scissors in the first place.

But yeah as long as they add something to the movie I think they work. Sometimes they add a new layer to everything you’ve just seen. I think they fail when they’re used only to remind people what happened like your example

What are your thoughts on flashbacks that are characters telling a story? Usually seen in mystery movies when detectives question a suspect

in many cases i find them lazy? like they are intended to fill you in on the lore/gap in the story but i just think there is better execution. you need to tease the viewers not spoonfeed them, treat your viewers like curious children, not babies. at least thats how i feel about all this

Your Good Time example is one of my favorites

I mostly prefer flashbacks when they’re presented as memories or thoughts from a character’s POV.

Watching One Piece rn and this preference makes a lot of the pacing issues much more tolerable. (Know you’re talking about film but this topic has been on my mind lately cause of anime lol)

I can’t think of any examples off my head but I think I like them?

I’m sure that would fall in the same vein as “flashbacks shown with funny/intriguing commentary”…..as a whole I like the flashbacks when the character is telling another character a story and then we see it play out as we hear it.

I especially like them when they cut back and forth between the present of the character storytelling and the flashback. The best example I can think of is Sexy Beast how they inner cut multiple scenes together.

I couldn’t find the full scene but here’s some:

The first movie that comes to mind is The Killers (1946). Flashbacks should be judged on a case by case basis, but that movie is an argument for abandoning them.

they're great. idk the things that youtube movie critics tend to complain about like exposition dialogue, music montages, plot holes, "dated" special effects etc. are just lazy critiques to me. They're things you fixate on when you have absolutely no original thought of your own.
