Initially I was disappointed but overall it’s a pretty enjoyable project, fun to listen to fr

My expectations were kinda high, not only bc of Ye but GOOD as a whole. My favorite team/sound was 08-10. That’s when Cudi, Push, and Mr Hudson first got on board. Ye started incorporating more electronic elements into his production. GOOD Friday era too ofc

Moving into 2011-2012 he started making more trap inspired records bc that sound was starting to dominate. In this Chase N Cashe interview he brought up an interesting point about how at one point Ye and Drake had hot albums but they wouldn’t be as big in the clubs bc they didn’t have songs like Waka and Gucci

So I think around the time Cruel Summer released the trap wave was everywhere and Ye keeps up with the times so you get songs like Clique, Dont Like, and Mercy. Even To The World lowkey has trap elements

Don’t get me wrong I think those are classics. Plus it was cool to see Ye explore that sound more. I just feel like he would’ve made a better compilation during a different time. At a different time in his career the Cruel Summer singles wouldn’t be the highlight of a GOOD Music album. I like when he uses the trap sound but I don’t think it’s Kanye at his best

But like I said, I enjoy listening to Cruel Summer. Considering the roster it was like the best care scenario. The lineup was CyHi, Push, Sean, Teyana, Common, and Chainz. Even Cudi was barely on there. With that in mind I think we got the best product we could get from that team. It was an interesting blend of early 2010s trap/hip hop and some of the elements of the GOOD Music sound selection and song structures
