I just finished watching The Dark Knight Rises at home and the change of aspect ratio between IMAX scenes and anamorphic, traditional scenes were slightly annoying. I know why he doesn’t choose to shoot the whole film in IMAX (too loud and unpractical) so why not dubbing those scenes when IMAX cameras won’t be in use?
So is this when some scenes are louder than others?
no he means when the size of the film changes
look at this trailer for example, the height of the video changes like 3-4 times
i personally think in tenet the aspect ratio changes were done well
some other movies do it well too, for example hunger games 2 did it pretty cool, mission impossible fallout did it nice too
overall i only think theyre annoying when its 1 scene in which it changes, if a movie has 2 aspect ratios and it uses 1 for action sequences and 1 for other sequences i dont really care about it
I personally don’t like it, unless it’s part of a creative cue. But aspect ratios constantly changing and fade outs are my pet peeve. Unless it’s done as a creative cue, like Marriage story for example I liked those fade outs because it was done for a reason

Never paid attention but I can’t unsee it now
I don't know if what you're referring to is what they did in the season 2 premiere of Mandalorian, but that s*** was epic to me
Every Trey Edward Shults film uses them extremely well, especially It Comes at Night.
Xavier Dolan's Mommy was the first time i remember an aspect ratio change flooring me
Not a big deal at all
You're referring to the IMAX aspect ratio. If i recall, you can only shoot about 2-3mins of footage with an IMAX camera, this is why not all of the movie is shot in that format.
Sometimes you see movies that always have the IMAX format but those are upscaled for people who want the imax experience but those films are not always shot in IMAX.
This is why some movies you'll see the "shot in imax" as part of the poster.

Infinity War and Endgame out now
Cool when its used sparingly and for big action set pieces
Annoying when the movie is constantly switching between them like Dark Knight Rises or Transformers

You're correct that's what it was. I came in here to say that was a good example of it being used well
Honestly never noticed this before in my life and I'm not sure that I will even after reading this thread
Doesn’t really matter to me
If the movie is good, then it’s good
It’s not distracting to you? It’s not only the aspect ratio change, also the picture quality loss going from IMAX to normal widescreen sometimes in one scene. Colours are less vibrant, more noticeable film grain. Overall IMAX sequences feature super high and stable resolution, look clearer and brighter with better darks.
Movie quality aside, Aquaman being mostly in that wide open matte ratio made the visuals stand out much more and it worked. Same with BR2049
The way Transformers does is is f***ing disgusting though
When they changed aspect ratios in the Mandalorian it was jaw dropping because I think that’s the first time it was done for TV

Lmao. I’m watching Mando now and just witnessed the aspect ratio change. Came to KTT to post about it and saw this thread. I don’t understand why they don’t always have full screen. Looks way better. I’ve been annoyed about that during the whole show. So used to Netflix filling up the screen

My G. That movie is 8 years old now. He uses more and more IMAX for each movie. Could barely notice the changes in TENET
