recently got one and am not proud of it. i'm learning my lesson from the experience and just want to move past this and do better. as far as employment goes, how severe is it?

for reference, i'm 21 and in college right now as an undergrad IT major. this is my first offense and it was a misdemeanor

OP, firms and companies will conduct a background check on you in most cases post-interview if they decide to go forward with you as a candidate.

They will ask about the conviction. You just have to be apologetic about it, assure them that you've done the right counseling and reflection and all that, and that you have moved forward from it being a better person.

The main key point is to ALWAYS DISCLOSE IF THEY ASK ABOUT IT.

This will affect your job prospects for the short-term (since the DUI is recent), but it's definitely not the be-all-end-all of your career.

what about on the initial application? typically the forms ask if you've been convicted of a felony. should i still put it even though it's just a misdemeanor? i planned on not putting it but being upfront and apologetic about it before background checks as you said. just unsure because job apps usually don't ask about misdemeanors, only felonies

It's tough. The point is to not spring it on HR so they don't have a kneejerk reaction. Sometimes they'll immediately terminate you if you don't speak a word of it before the background check.

I would personally absolutely write it down still but if possible, mark it as a misdemeanor. Something like "DUI in x/x/xx, Misdemeanor".

Also FYI @op I totally forgot, but they will probably ask your permission for a background check. You can also just disclose it there. Most of the time there's a form or you can simply tell your HR contact before they do the check.

yeah dui/dwis aren’t that big of a deal in the long term. always disclose them though (IF asked) because if your company contracts an external background check you’re not getting past it.

the majority of background checks go back ~10 years, so it’ll still be on your record but eventually it wont be relevant.

and yeah if you’re getting into a job involving the operation of a vehicle you’re f***ed, but you’re an IT major so i doubt that’s in your plans. generally speaking most companies won’t care about it much if it’s disclosed, some sectors it might give you issues though, banks in particular are real hard asses about that kind of s*** from my experience.

You ain’t about to get no job that involve driving, but please don’t listen to niggas saying it’ll cause some major (or even noticeable minor) effects

Hasn’t affected s*** for me and nobody asked about it and got 2 offers for a job better than the one I had months after I got the ovi
