Look at 2006 for example. It has the “most diversity” of any year on this list but when you dig a single layer deeper you see all of the songs are one hit wonder snap songs. Chingy? Jibbs? Lil Jon? Yung Joc? Yung Dro? In this context “diversity” just means more guys. I’m probably just tired and cranky tbh but these numbers don’t really mean anything to me in the context of diversity
Lil Jon, Yung Joc and Chingy had multiple hits tho
Feels like it's becoming more of a lifestyle genre that just happens to include music as a side thing. Before... the music came first and then everything else.
I’m not arguing the lack of diversity im arguing these numbers don’t mean s***
Let OP get his excel skills off

I think it's the opposite. Hip-hop music USED to be a part of a larger subculture and lifestyle, but the criteria for entry eroded away and now it's just another genre category on the charts. Most of these new gen 'underground' rappers have no real cultural connection to hip-hop. When they talk about their influences they list a bunch of pop stars and rock stars. They won't front any of the hip-hop podcasts and radio shows for an interview, but they will talk to video game streamers and twitter pages run out of Mumbai. Their version of Funkmaster Flex is a white woman in anime cosplay called "Hyperpop Daily".
The same way everybody started using the same lingo/dressing the same, gettin the same cuts, posing the same for pics and having the same political views.
Conformity pressure is hella powerful. The market adjusts to whats in demand

Personally, I always felt the music and lifestyle/culture were 1a and 1b. Music was a bit important but the cultural aspects were always right behind it.

I cant stand for Young Dro being grouped in with those other guys even if his debut single technically was a “dance” song lol

The aesthetic and lifestyle of being a rapper swallowed people actually wanting to be a rapper lol
