    It’s like brownie points

    depends on the artist

something like donda i never have the urge to play the album in full cause of how long and messy it is even though theres great songs on it

    important

Depends on what type of artist you are.

I personally prefer just a collection of the best songs. Those albums age better to me.

Sometimes extra good songs are sacrificed to make the album flow better. But after the first few listens the cohesion doesn’t really matter you just gonna play your fav songs.

Yeah an album that focuses on the theme and being cohesion will sacrifice song quality to flow with the rest of the album then I skip those after the first listen but when a artist focuses on good music first every song is something worth listening to because they weren't restricted to one idea

I can appreciate a cohesive album that is trying to do something different but its not something I listen to everyday

Honestly probably the most important thing for me.

Does it make it better as a body of work?

Me personally that s*** makes albums for me. Yeah if an album is a collection of tracks that are 10/10, the album is gonna be 10/10. But if an album's 10/10 tracks fit snugly together like pieces of a puzzle and they all bang? That s*** just takes it to the next level.

it doesn't make it a better album by default. too much cohesion is boring to me, I like albums that take you through different sounds. I like the beats on Side A of Scorpion and I feel like the sound of most of that half album was great. but I also liked the majority of the songs. a cohesive sounding bland and dry album imo is not worth repeat listens

Scorpion is really underrated. The perfect album to introduce anyone who never listened to Drake before and gives them a piece of everything Drake has to offer. It's "cohesive" if you consider that to be cohesive. That's a 10/10

I am a sucker for good transitions between songs so I would say at least somewhat

same here. pi'erre transitions have bumped his albums up a few notches for me for sure

If the songs are good enough to stand on their own, idgaf

Bruce Springsteen’s The River & Ye’s Donda are examples of this

    Depends on the execution.

Life After Death was not cohesive but is a top tier album.

Ditto for All Eyez On Me.

But I do appreciate cohesive albums that stick with a similar theme or sound.

neither of those albums are top-tier though

they’re good but just have too much filler

makes a huge difference to me

would rather listen to an album front to back (which these types of albums make easy) than picking 5 songs from an album to chuck on the playlist and never revist again

I hate how mfs don’t make real albums no more. Or very rarely.

When I was a bit younger and would sit down and listen to an album front to back and really just enjoy it, it mattered a whole lot to me and my friends. I’m thinking maybe 2015-2018ish, that late high school and early college period. Now that I’m a bit older and have a lot less time I just want good songs honestly, don’t really care if it’s cohesive. I remember life of Pablo pissing me off with how all over the place it was. If I was like 25 working 50 hours a week when Pablo came out I prob would’ve liked it a lot more.

    Important if there’s a theme

  • Apr 20, 2022

Yea depends on the output of the artist in general. Never cared for cohesiveness with Wayne but I expect it with Kanye
