  • like actually know a jewish person. not just knowing who they are, but having a conversation with them and knowing something about them beyond the fact that they're jewish.

i'm just interested because i'm jewish myself and grew up in a jewish community so my perspective is a bit distorted. interested to see how many americans (and non-americans) actually know jewish people since there are only 15,000,000 of us in the world.

would rather keep this to irl relationships only. i do not count!

i just want a better perspective. my general thesis on antisemitism in america has been that a lot of people are antisemites because they don't know jews and only know what they're told from people and outlets that they trust. by reaching out to people who didn't grow up in a jewish community and asking if they know a jewish person beyond casually meeting them that could give me some better perspective on whether that thesis holds any weight.

and that's not meant to call anyone on ktt an antisemite, because i know 99% of users aren't, but you guys are a pretty good sample of people all over the world so i think it's a valid gauge.

yeah in america it's only 2% of the population which is much higher proportion than worldwide numbers, but we mostly reside on the coasts or in big cities/suburbs around big cities. so it's really like 0.5% in states that aren't NY or CA. probably less but i don't have time to check the numbers.

    That’s not a sound theory
People who grew up in diverse environments can still be racist

i'm not saying that it's an all encompassing theory that explains all forms of antisemitism. it's more of a general theory explaining antisemitism derived from far-fetched conspiracy theories.

    Discrimination can’t be explained
    It’s irrational

lol People are and have been racist regardless of if they know a black, hispanic, middle eastern or asian person though. Even if they have a friend of that group they can still be prejudice to the entire group. I as a black person have had friends all throughout my life that define blackness a certain way, say nigga, are ignorant or their main depiction of black people is what is constructed in media.

The media depiction of people often not in creative roles or sprinkled in for representation isn't good. Its often why we joke amongst each other that we were brought in for the pamphlet or pictures are taken of us on campuses to show that the campus cares.

The more people of all groups we get in media, creators, journalist the more it helps depiction. Because language is key and seeing people of various groups is key. Some with code switching at times and some not. The more we all see each other's realities, traditions, values the more it helps unite us.

Where do you live? NYC and NJ have extremely high Jewish populations and hate crimes against Jewish people have been on the rise for years

Probably the #1 victims of hate crimes here
