The biggest inspiration for Twisted Fantasy is Wu Tang Clan (90s NY hip hop in general really), to have a super clean sounding album when you're paying respect to Wu Tang is silly, it needs to be rugged and textured and have soul
This was from an interview in Jesus is King era where Consequence talked about how Ye likes mixing to be done and it's applicable to lots of his artistic choices:
“So, dealing with five engineers or three engineers, I don’t need a kickback from anybody to show favoritism for a mix or a master. I want the best product. “Follow God,” for instance, the version that’s on the album is a dirty version that got cleaned up. In this day and age, Kanye and I both decided, “No, let's just do the dirty one.” It’s not like it’s on a two-inch tape where everything has to go in unison. Just put the dirty one on it. That’s the one. It doesn’t matter who does it for me, it matters what feels authentic, and what feels like the people are going to gravitate to it."

@notbrock please explain
I don’t even know why people get so mad and defend the mixing so much, Dude above you quoted that post like 4 times and literally had a meltdown
It’s one of the best albums of the 2010s, One of Kanye’s best and easily has some of the best production the genres ever had
It just doesn’t have the greatest mix, Regardless if it was intentional or not. Cherry Bomb by Tyler was supposed to sound like that, Guess what? It’s still ass
I saw that lmao but you speakin facts lol.

Something being “rugged and textured to have soul” doesn’t equal bad mix
The bad mixes and lofi sound of old Wu albums come from the fact RZA was using lofi equipment and didn’t really know what the f*** he was doing. I get that added to vibe of the album but it wasn’t completely intentional. We saw the same s*** in 2010 with OF, Half that music was mixed and recorded horribly but it didn’t matter because that was the vibe
There’s no Wu album that’s over compressed and blown the f*** out like MBDTF
That part about Follow God is literally saying Kanye doesn’t care about mixing, He’s saying “if it hits it hits”
Which is actually kinda going against the whole argument of “He intended the whole album to have this specific sound” He’s saying if a record feels good to him that’s all that matters, Even if the mix is terrible
Why you so hostile about this? Like god damn man lighten up lmao
If you’re saying Random Access Memories by Daft Punk isn’t mixed incredibly well then I can’t take anything you saying seriously
they did a great job but it's also not something worth calling people out for

i will die on the hill that @randomaccessmemories ever since the original piece dropped has never been more than a shameless piece of f***en history for people to hold
they did a great job but it's also not something worth calling people out for
What you mean “calling people out”?
We discussing music… On a music forum lmao
Y’all just go into panic triggered mode anytime anyone says something slightly negative about MBDTF. It ain’t that deep man

mbdtf is a great album and thats's it !!!!!
There were a lot of threads on KTT1 about this. A couple Mike Dean quotes:

He admitted someone else f***ed up the master and he was trying to fix it after the fact
Bro @‘d an album
it's a draft because you're a slimey afterthought which will be fixed easily

?
I would never say it's a better album but Yeezus sounds much better than MBDTF to my ears. I try out new headphones with that one

Well there y’all go
Words from the main engineer of the album
i'm fighting fans of fans but f*** that guy all uppity n annoying
damn idk
I like your cow heart though
You say outdated as if it’s a bad thing.
We don’t care
Get em high
Workout plan
Breathe in breathe out
Gold digger
Bring me down
Good morning
Homecoming
Good life
All sound ‘outdated’ but I mean that as the new lane rap has gone down is generic trap beats on 808 drums.
He made a timeless album which tells a story (something which artists don’t even do now) and every song was put on there for a reason. It can never sound outdated.
Dude is 1 post away from telling me to kill myself because I said the engineering on MBDTF is rough
I don't think any of it aged, it just still has some mastering problems that can be more obvious on modern hardware

@notbrock i was the only one defending mbdtf cos i thought it was fine, don't turn me into the villain c***'

You talked a lot, all you needed to say was: “You're right”
The only point I’m making is that it’s intentional I don’t care to speak about something being good or bad as that is simply opinion which I don’t care about, Namaste 🙏
