He was extremely skilled, witty, caused controversy and appealed to middle america in a way that rap hadnt before. It's not just "cuz he white" literally just simplifying it. Its one of the reasons but he had alot going for him at the time

People knew Hip Hop, but it wasn't popular like that. It was a minority.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think P Diddy was the first rapper to make rap go really commercial.

After No Way Out dropped, a bunch of rappers like Mase, DMX, Jay, Will Smith, Lauryn Hill, etc. started going multi-plat like it was nobody's business which probably opened the door for Eminem in a way.

I was only a small baby at the time(born in 96) but even I remember "I'll Be Missing You" like it just came out. Puff brought the pop audience to rap and Eminem magnified it and made it more global.

Em is the GTA of rap music. People hated it,didn't understand it, and tried to cancel it, and now it's one of the biggest games ever.

Just like NWA which inspired him obviously.

I think Madonna and Snoop Dogg are good examples of this too.

They're both loved icons now but there was a time when both were seen as a "threat" to society, especially when Madonna dropped "Like A Prayer" and Snoop had that Murder trial and a whole movie about it. Lol.

    Nigga went from this:

To having a show with Martha Stewart. Haha.

Yeah, Diddy and them were great at making hits. I would also add Snoop and specially Nelly.

eminem was a cultural phenomena in the early 2000s. it was insane how popular he was.

the dre affiliation played a role in him being accepted by some hardcore fans, then he had the casual audience that gravitated to him because he was a white rapper that really exploded. not too hard to figure out. he had casual fans that prob only listened to pop radio end up becoming big time fans of his.

Fam. I remember hearing Eminem on AM stations in my mom's old car talking about him ruining society and I was only a kid. Lol

His name floated around like crazy back then.

I feel Nelly's popularity gets understated tho. He wasn't the celebrity that Em/50 were but his music was literally everywhere from 2000-2004.

He was the 1st rapper I consciously listened to as a kid("Ride Wit Me" being the 1st rap song I memorized the lyrics to as a kid) and I wore a band-aid on my head to school once because of him lol.

Why is there so little respect for old rappers in Hip Hop? Do rock/pop fans trash old artists? Nope.

Snoop imo was different, dude was a gang member, signed to a even bigger gang member.

Love Snoop, but I can see why people didn't like him lol

And Pac was wilding too much, that's how he ended up getting killed.

Touring hard outside of America also had a lot to do with it. He kept his loyal fanbase growing.

Go to any middle eastern country in the mid 2000s and you were guaranteed to hear 50, Em or Tupac blasting out of shops and cars man their reach was insane

True rap fans do respect the older rappers.

It's just that rap has been commercialized so long that you also have casuals who happen to listen to rap and only d***ride who's trendy, popping, or on the radio.

But niggas like Kendrick, Cole, Drake, Earl, Tyler, KRIT, etc. most definitely respect the old school.

Vince is a rare case of a nigga who doesn't but still makes great music but I felt he was trolling.

True, I remember seeing people wearing G-Unit shirts in other countries while on vacation. They had original G-Unit clothing but in some places you could also buy fakes lol

Being on a rap forum doesn't mean much tbh.

There's people on the Coli who literally s*** on rap as a genre...lol.

Even personalities like DJ Akademiks ain't really into rap like that beside surface level stuff but still have a platform on places like Complex.

But, on KTT, I think the "dust" sentiment has calmed down as a whole and the 90's/early 2000's era gets plenty of props. And half the niggas just say that to troll anyway.

I live in a city that's half Hispanic and I randomly hear "In Da Club" playing in outdoor cookouts and fiestas on top of of bunch of Salsa, Cumbia, and Bachata...lol.

I also dated a chick from Peru and her mom never let her listen to rap(but she did anyway) but her mom considers herself a fan of "50 Cents" lmao
