    12 tracks

    Every single track is fire

Production is great on every song

Lyrics, wordplay, flows, and rhyme schemes fire on every song

    Great song concepts

    Great features

I don’t understand rap discourse no more lol. If this dropped 10 years ago it would’ve been unanimous. Nowadays yall will say something is trash just because you don’t feel like hearing a nigga voice lol

"If this dropped 10 years ago it would’ve been unanimous."

Get the f*** out of here You really think the consensus around this borderline mixtape would change if it were stacked up against albums like TPAB and IYRTITL? Most people don't even consider it better than 2014 FHD and that was Cole 10 years ago

Ya'll way to conservative for no reason imo. The quality is there, the impact is automatically there because he has one of the biggest fanbases in hip-hop history, there are no skips

Wtf do you want niggas to do?

    What’s the impact?

My take is that The Off-Season dropping when it did is why the reception was better than it should’ve been, because it came after a run of stinker albums.

If The Off-Season had released back in 2015 after FHD, stacked up next to IYRTITL and TPAB, it would’ve been trashed

    Trashed FOR WHAT exactly?

For having excellent raps and production and arguably being even more consistent and concise than FHD?

Don't know why the standards have to be dropped for J Cole. First you motherfuckers were trying to say 4YEO is a classic and there's maybe 4 good songs on that b****. Now y'all trying to say The Off Season is a classic even though it's had no impact, no innovation, nothing that really makes it stand out to be ranked with the best works of the genre Y'all need to chill.

He has a point. If this was Cole's project after 2014 FHD, it would largely be seen as a disappointment. If Kanye were to release MBDTF now, it would be praised even more because of his recent output. Flowerboy is an objectively great album, but it's reception would not have been as great if it dropped after Wolf. But people were already disappointed by Cherry Bomb so it got that boost

I guess man yall entitled to yall opinion but I really just don’t see how The Off Season could ever be viewed as a drastic step down from FHD outside of it having less hits/commercial appeal. The rapping is better, the production is just as good, and it has less skips. Every track on The Off Season clears GOMD and Hello imo, not saying those songs are bad but just saying

I need an answer to this. Mf said it's automatically there because Cole has a fanbase By that logic, every Drake album is a classic

Lmaooo hell nah man impact is just one box to check but yes every Drake album has impact

When Cole drops a quality project because of his base and his place in the game it’s on auto-impact

Just like when Nas drops quality it’s auto-impact

    The box is automatically checked

Now there are other boxes to be checked to achieve classic status for sure

Not everything has to be either bad, mid or a classic. Can't y'all just be at peace if the consensus is that it's a good/great project?

these discussions are always dumb because everyone has different criteria as to what constitutes a “classic” anyways

If a 12 song album has no skips, has legendary rapping and production, great song concepts and content, great features, and 5 top 10s how can you sit there with a straight face and tell me that album is not a classic?

Like logically what is your argument at that point other than “LETS NOT THROW THE WORD CLASSIC AROUND GUYS”

For being completely uninteresting and unnecessary.

It doesn’t say anything interesting, the production is nothing to write home about, it doesn’t try anything creative whatsoever, it’s just a decent rap project with some good-to-great rapping for 40 minutes.

It would’ve been a complete misfire after what is widely regarded as his best album (FHD). Especially in comparison to what his peers dropped that year: a super entertaining and hard mixtape (IYRTITL), and a thought-provoking, socially relevant concept album (TPAB).

The reason Off-Season worked after 4YEO and KOD was because people got tired of the flat albums wrapped around concepts and just wanted to hear the nigga rap again, which is what he provided on Off-Season

Can’t really say anything else other than that I strongly disagree here man

    Like completely different perspective lol

Also side note its ok to drop a traditionalist rap project that doesn’t take risks sonically just ask Nas

First week Top 10s from major album drops in the streaming era have little-to-no weight man come on.

None of those Off-Season songs lasted more than a week in the Top 10.

The entire album was off the chart completely within two months, with the exception of my life, which hovered in the 60s/70s for a while before dropping off
