Does he have those as an artist or a producer
You sound you the one coming up with categories, you work for the Grammys?
if so lemme hold two tickets, this girl I’m tryna get with LOVES the Grammys
Competing with 19 year olds but another nominee went platinum in 2014. You worried bout the wrong things, the wrong things
Nahhhhh I talked about them too
This whole category is dumb as f***
Kid laroi and Japanese breakfast shouldn’t be there too

I personally heard about Kid Laroi and Japanese Breakfast in the last like year or so
Japanese Breakfast was really notable enough where they shouldn’t be eligible? Best new artist isn’t perfect at all but usually it’s somewhat accurate to when an artist breaks through to the mainstream

Bro I heard Japanese Breakfast in 2013. The category is useless if it just means "first time they were popping in the mainstream" tbh

Idk if that makes it useless, it’s a mainstream award show, if you really wanna be a purist about the word “new” where does it end, should it technically only be people who literally started making music this past year?

Should at least be their first debut album with a wide-release. Japanese Breakfast was on their 3rd album by the time they were nominated

That’s fair. I wasn’t aware of JB but maybe you’re right about them. What’s your thoughts on Finneas? He put out his debut album last year

IMO, he and his sister are like a band releasing through the name of the sister. You know those bands that are named after the singer but have several members, like La Roux on their first album, or Sade? Kind of like that.
There should be a rule that they shouldn't have won Grammys before in order to be nominated for Best New Artist, IMO, although it gets trickier with songwriters. But this is not just any songwriter, it is a guy with 8 Grammys, which is already an insane amount.
IMO, this is like a band member going solo. Like yeah, Paul McCartney had his first solo album in the 70s, but that misses the entire Beatles era.
They're trying to plant him as his own artist. Just the Grammys serving their only purpose
I remember they tried to push Tori Kelly for YEARS H.E.R. is another Grammy-core artist

Fair argument, I guess I wouldn’t be mad if that was a rule
But comparing Finneas to Paul in that context might be a bit of a stretch
And they’re not really a band, he’s the producer, like what if 40 dropped a solo vocal album lol, would he deserve to be considered as it’s his first endeavor as an “artist”’or nah

Fine, then take Ringo
40 would not be a new artist IMO, it's like saying Alchemist was a new artist when he dropped 1st Infantry
A ruleset would be:
-Never received a Grammy award or nomination before
-First charted on Billboard Top 200 albums or Top 100 songs a year ago

Decent rule set I see where you’re coming from but I sometimes feel like people nitpick this category a little too much, the AOTY category has been much more frustrating to me through the years

The entire Grammys are frustrating dawg, we are like people stuck in an abused relationship still discussing this award shyt
My answer been f*** the Grammys since 2014 and that answer hasn’t changed. Joke of an awards show.
Cuz he loves them
bro thinks the grammys he won have any worth

That’s what the Grammys should be using as the category
Like they’re the flagship music awards, and instead of using their platform to promote new artists they’re using it to promote established acts and in the case of this year VERY established acts
Of all the weird best new artist noms through the years, this one really ain’t that bad. He has Grammys as a producer not an artist. Should Kanye have not been eligible for best new artist in 2004 because he already had success producing?
fineas dropped a college dropout?

You’re right it sucks. All I want is one hip hop album as AOTY and then I think I can stop worrying about them. The kid in me that saw Grad lose to Herbie Hancock and C3 lose to Robert Plant still needs that for closure I think

Quality isn’t really relevant to the conversation we were having

Yeah, New Artist always had weird cases of people who were way into their careers
Looking through Wikipedia
2021:
Kaytranada - dude's been around much longer and has won awards at other ceremonies, won bunch of awards for the album 99.9% which came out in 2016
2019:
Bebe Rexha - Bebe Rexha was part of a semi-successful band in 2011 and 2012, her first solo single was in 2014, she had two top 10 features in 2015, she had a successful solo single in 2016 with Nicki Minaj with 200 million views on YouTube. This one is definitely bullshit
2017:
Chance The Rapper - they only did this because the missed out on nominating him after his Acid Rap release

Yeah, that Herbie Hancock album wasn't even one of his better ones if I remember correctly.
Speaking of Robert Plant, the woman he sang with and was nominated with, Alison Krauss, has an insane amount of Grammys. One of the most Grammy-core artists ever. The only female artist with more Grammys is Beyonce, and she only surpassed her in 2021. I've never heard a single Alison Krauss song in my life I think
The fact that Grammys even has Best Bluegrass Album is kind of hilarious. Like why specifically this sub-genre?
