The war with the US was inevitable. They were both competing for Asian markets and neither of them were comfortable with the other. The US had already bombed the f*** outta Japan and they suffered heavy losses from the Soviets. Japan was heavily weakened already, whether or not they would've been nuked the US was still going to swiftly invade them. The Chinese also were never going to sit down and let Japan occupy Manchuria forever. The Nationalists had American backing and the Communists had huge numbers, its not like they were pushovers.

I think they're pretty close today. Japan was way ahead in the 20th century for a myriad of reasons, but much of it is due to becoming a client state for the US after WW2.
