So if an album was last certed in 2020 as 3x platinum, it may in reality have sold 4 million by now and not be certed 4x plat yet

PF was updated 3x plat in 2016 while mbdtf was updated 2x plat in 2018 then 3x plat in 2020 which means Pf is outselling it lol.
