I try to upload pictures to get a profile picture but the site just won't upload them. Is there any restriction concerning file formats or image size or perhaps a different issue?

yes. I tried my old KTT avi.
media.kanyetothe.com/uploaded_avatars/avatar_1186305_1499373096.png
as well as my letterboxd avi, which is linked from gravatar.
I also tried scaling them down to say 300x300
