This is a pandemic. Millions of people will die. I’ve seen people say, “it’s just another swine flu.” No it’s not another swine flu. Yes, the swine flu killed hundreds of thousands of people but it was way less contagious and had a death rate less than 0.03%. Covid-19 has an estimated death rate of 3.4% according to the WHO. That’s 100x more deadly than the swine flu. I don’t care how young and healthy you are. If you expose yourself to the coronavirus then you run the risk of infecting people who aren’t young and healthy. You have a moral obligation to prevent yourself from catching the coronavirus.
Yes, people are starting to take this more seriously, especially with all of the events getting canceled in the last couple days, but it's not enough. This crisis will get worse and I don’t think we’re ready for it. Just yesterday, I got yelled at for saying the n-word multiple times (in a heat of passion), and the guy who yelled at me did not even mention the coronavirus. I explained to him that he was missing the forest for the trees and that this is not the time to get angry about semantics. I hope that he went home and seriously thought about his purpose in a time of crisis because we all need to work together to minimize the harm from the coronavirus and to protect vulnerable populations. I'm not saying that we need to panic. I'm saying that we can't let ourselves get distracted. We need to be realistic about the coronavirus and I hope that soon we will start to understand the gravity of this situation.
