I see so many people online always saying wow they barely even used any CGI that's why it's good. It has become a marketing gimmick by studios cause CGI looked like a video game in the early days but The Force Awakens has way more CGI than any of the Prequels.
They just do better CGI now and use practical effects for reference. The best visuals are mix of both practical and CG.

cool creative practical effects > realistic, convincing cgi
cool creative practical effects > realistic, convincing cgi
you're probably buying into the propaganda and confusion
studios straight up lie and say there was no CGI when there is
When movies are given time to plan their CGI use it can look great. It’s when rewrites, reshoots, & studio interface causes things to change quickly and VFX have to meet an unrealistic deadline where things get wonky.
But I think we’re saying the same thing op so I agree

Studios tryna pull the Nolan type beat.
cool creative practical effects > realistic, convincing cgi
Perfect example is the Orks and action in lord of the rings vs cgi computer animated video game looking Orks and action in the Hobbit
Love these vids, super interesting, but I don't feel that strongly about it. Marketing is deceptive by nature, and the negative connotations with visual effects have been earned. It doesn't stop anyone from watching Avatar or Jurassic World or Transformers apparently.

"The villain was shot for real. What you're seeing on screen is real blood."
ain't watching no yt video but no, CGI isnt inherently better now than it was back in the day and there's plenty of examples of lousy CG in movies with $200 million budgets
