The Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) are not cults because they lack authoritarian leaders (the spiritual leaders are not who jim jones was to them), they don’t imprison or isolate members, those who identify as followers of those religions can exit at any time, and internally allow for debate and diversity rather than a singular enforced interpretation

If anyone leverages those religions to create a cult it does not mean the religion is a cult

But what about all the people who died in the name of those religions? Crusades? Killing people who don’t practice the same faith. Jesus was persecuted by the Jews for not practicing their faith it was blasphemy to them. That’s why he died.

The Crusades were performed by European monarchies who declared their nations were Christian nations. The Crusades were done to reclaim land that was at that time under Islamic control to increase their influence in the world. It wasn’t done under purely religious motivations. The man who wrote the new testament of the bible (it wasn’t one man who wrote it anyway) didn’t tell them to do it or else.

Jesus was crucified because his teachings were gaining a loud following and were threatening the influence of the pharisees. The Jews didn’t crucify him the Romans did because he declared himself a king which was punishable by crucifixion. The pharisees used this as their way to get rid of him it wasn’t under the command of a cult leader

You are free to think whatever you want but if you read into what a cult is and what a religion is you would separate the two out of respect for the victims of dangerous cults. Whether you believe in the validity of individual religions is irrelevant to the question of “are religions cults”

My grandpa watched his baby brother die from gangrene because my great grandparent thought it could be prayed away.

My family stopped going to a Methodist church when I was a kid because my mom decided she wanted my sister to reach a certain age and choose for herself if she wanted to be baptized or not. The church didn’t like that and we stopped going. Religion just a way to persecute and shun people.
