thread feels racist
Yes, because acknowledging Tupac & The Streets is racist.
Thank U, Next
People are going to attack you and throw a tantrum, but I agree. Music is watered down to the point of mediocrity being accepted and people treat it as background noise, it's almost like people forgot about making good music.
gen z i heard you wanna cancel me?
guess what, i’ve been the number emcee since you were learning ABCs

It's legitimately mind-blowing how mediocre music has become...but there's still some great music out there.
I think the biggest victim of dumbing down was hip-hop because I still remember the 2010's resurgence of lyrical hip-hop & Rap Genius being a phenomenon.
Nowadays, who checks out Rap Genius except if someone wants to find out about a sneak diss or lame subliminal diss.
It's a sad reality, OP, and I agree with you 💯

Streaming services like Spotify and Soundcloud have massively changed things, where it led to artists no longer putting in the effort they used to put into their albums. The rising popularity in Tik Tok didn't help either, sad to witness that a meme song will help you gain commercial success faster than putting out something of quality.
I clearly remember someone on Reddit saying that the biggest shift that occurred in hip-hop in 2013 is the subject matter in songs no longer staying consistent.

Whoa...that last part about subject matter not staying consistent is kind of true
I just feel like Kendrick Lamar & very few rappers left that still put out legitimately high quality bodies of work.
But the intention of the topic is this disturbing trend towards below-mediocre emcee skills that you'd here in some high school rap contest.
To hear that low-quality rapping in a million-selling record is what shocks me the most
This davidp ass thread
I've been a KTT lurker since Yeezus Era (2013) so consider this as my 10th anniversary for KTT ♥️🙌💙

It's funny because the musicality itself is improving given the greater prevalence in song structures, incorporation of melodies, and inclusion of elements from other music genres, when viewing it from a statistical standpoint.
However, the most disappointing matter is we're clearly regressing in regard to rapping and lyricism. Sure, we have plenty of "rap" fans left, however, they're focusing more towards billboard charts or trying to seem "avant garde"
