So I gotta not be critical and start off by saying how much I love what them and ride d***?

I never said they were bad actors or anything, I just said hollywood overuses them- which they do. And he has a point about lightskin actresses getting more roles, look at lovecraft country for example.

I hate this culture where you can't be slightly critical of something around you without first defending yourself by saying how much you love something so you don't get branded a hater. Never once did I say they were bad actors or undeserving. Just that they're overcasted and hollywood isn't trying hard enough.

They 2 been in maybe 6 movies each over the last 4 years and you saying they’re overused

But I’m saying and OP literally replied to my post, that’s not what he meant.... he worded it incorrectly. He wants to see a variety of black faces not just those 2. To even claim that he wants to see less black faces doesn’t even make any sense

There are a variety of black faces in many places but y’all are just refusing to acknowledge them

Bro, no one knows who tf Kiki Layne is. She’s not a mainstream actress, you’re trying to make her seem much bigger than she is which is ridiculous.

And are you kidding me? No one even knows about the movies you mentioned. How tf are you going to support movies that you’ve never heard of. Us and Get Out had huge marketing campaigns. You can’t be serious

Bruh production cost on Get Out was less than $10m including marketing wtf are you talking about. Word of mouth and people supporting black creatives is what made it spread like fire.

You saying no one knows Kiki Layne. YOU don’t know who she is. It’s why those of us itt have been saying just because YOU don’t know who they are and refuse to acknowledge them, doesn’t mean the Lakeith’s and Daniel Kaluuya’s of the world are blocking up anyone else’s chances.

You just refusing to support anything that isn’t main stream, that is what y’all are saying.

Yup Get Out definitely didn’t have a huge campaign. It wasn’t til after it came it it got a crazy buzz cus ppl genuinely f***ed with the film.

It even premiered at Sundance, which sundance usually doesn’t feature “big marketed films”

    This actually a better point.

I’m not mad at Hollywood creating an unofficial nigga cinematic universe by casting the same <15-20 black actors at A time

We should stop relying on the established studios and support more black creative houses/companies/directors tho so they don’t solely hold that power

Kiki Layne isn't a well known actress and trying to make her seem like one isn't going to change that.

    2. Get Out had an ELITE marketing campaign: variety.com/2017/biz/news/jordan-peele-get-out-marketing-racism-horror-1202012833

From the trailer to social media. Idc about budget. Third, you don't even know what tf you're talking about. I'm fine with watching non mainstream movies and I'm sure OP is too, he's clearly talking about mainstream movies. No s***, there's a variety of black actors in indie films but you know damn well that isn't what's being talked about here.

I think what we gotta realize is saying a popular black actor is “overcasted” makes it easier for rotations to happen. Where basically “we gonna allow 3 black actors to be popular at a time and when the masses get tired of yall will rotate in the next talent”

If you are fighting for a black actor to get less work while wanting another black actor to get more work you are literally rotating the two actors.

That’s why I keep saying change how yall word s***. Don’t say Daniel and Lakeith is overcasted, say such and such is undercasted. We should be wanting every black talent to be casted just as much as them and more.

Not one person who agrees with OP can logically tell me why Daniel/Lakeith should be casted less. And don’t say “oh he worded it wrong” the nigga keeps saying the same s***. He stands by that opinion and it’s dead wrong.

you're arguing semantics, what is wrong with y'all? I hope y'all don't act like this in real life.

He literally says "Anytime you say anything slightly critical niggas have heart palpitations, how dare I think for myself and not want the same 4 dudes on rotation exploring the same themes because that's all Hollywood is willing to pinch out."

aka he wants more variety, it's not big of a deal. If you disagree so be it, but acting like it's some conspiracy against successful black people like some of you are trying to make it be makes 0 sense

Yes plenty of Black actors, but over the last 3-5 years we been seeing the same 5 frequently cast in movies playing the same kinda role/character that they have before. S***, it's even worse for Black actresses. It's a shame really. But hopefully something that will change as more Black directors and producers get the opportunity to create films for the major studios.

You're making too much sense bro. They don't hear you. Dudes itt really trying to argue with me about lack of representation for dark skinned black women in movies when black women have specifically complained about this for years. They made Storm, a dark skin black woman in the comics, high yellow in the movies smh

You’re just moving the goalpost now. Made a blanket statement and now you’re adding more to it after it’s been proven otherwise. You wanna say you’ve been talking about “mainstream” now. Okay bet.

Let’s even make it easy, think of 10 “mainstream” movies with black leads or predominantly black cast within the last 5 years that Lakeith & Daniel starred in

    This is my post

"Nah, Hollywood in general tends to overuse the same actors/actresses. White, black, Asian, etc.

That said with people like Denzel, Forrest, and Will Smith getting older, they have to diversify. I’d like to see WAYYYYYY more variety in black actresses though. The only dark skin young actresses that get spotlight are Issa and Lupita. Other than that, we get the run of the mill high yellow black woman playing black roles. This goes everywhere, HBO, Netflix, movies, etc. I don’t see enough dark skinned black women. Secondly there simply needs to be more diverse topics- stories with black characters shouldn’t be regulated to slavery, crime, etc.

While I never watched Bridgerton, think that was something unique. Making a series where race isn’t the focal point and black people are viewed as just people and not just black"

You don't know what you're saying, read my original post and stop commenting. You just like to argue. I said for men, I disagree with OP and there are a lot more options in mainstream media but for women, there are not a lot of young dark skin actresses showcased which is why we literally just went back and forth on Kiki Layne who isn't someone known in mainstream media. If you didn't realize that I was talking about mainstream media despite literally saying Netflix, HBO, etc. and mentioning strictly MAINSTREAM actors/actresses then you're dense and there needs to be no further discussion.

  • Apr 4, 2021

How the hell do you expect black actors n actresses, and black film makers to gain mainstream appeal if you never support the smaller projects they do?

Now y’all just changing the argument to “Hollywood don’t give blacks opportunities” which has been known. That ain’t the original point of the thread.

So how can you be aware Hollywood not giving us equal opportunity, but your only focus is on the mainstream?

That’s like the dumbasses who say “all rap is about is b****es & money” when all they listen to is top 40 radio.

Again you're just spouting stuff out. OP and my whole argument was about the mainstream. I feel like I've repeated this a million times. That doesn't mean that I don't like nor watch non mainstream media. You're just arguing to argue. Again I disagree with OP in terms of black men, I think there's a growing number of a variety of black men acting in mainstream media, but for dark skinned women, it really isn't close and that's not even an argument. That said, thanks for introducing Queen Sugar, checking that out
