Actually he's not wrong to hold it at the base. It does look pretentious but it's correct to hold at base or towards the bottom of stem to keep the wine from getting warm if you're holding it at the bowl of the glass.

Obviously this holds true when you're drinking vintage wines that are extremely delicate/finnicky. I wouldn't do it when I'm drinking my everyday wine.

Also, if you're using an hand blown crystal glass (ex. Grassl 1855) the stem is so thin that you're required to hold it at the base for swirling.
