yeah I think it would’ve been hard for cole to make hits, that didn’t sound like drake songs. he would’ve done the rnb singer on the hook thing for a while
Instead he went featureless for most of his career
Reminds me of another point
Without Drake, we would’ve still seen number of rappers, both mainstream and underground, employ R&B/Pop singers for their hooks. Drake’s popularity definitely influenced rappers to start singing their hooks and not have to rely as much on singers in general.
Drake doesn't have many sons. The biggest artists of the past 10 years are Wayne, Keef or 808s Kanye-inspired
Kanye would have felt too responsible for being the face of hip hop and stayed Old Kanye.
Wale would’ve been a superstar who fizzled out eventually.
Trap music would’ve still been huge, but IYRTITL expedited that process, so I feel like around 2019 we would’ve entered the trap era fully.
J Cole would’ve had much more a chance to be the “Drake” of that universe and his albums would’ve been packed with hits, and honestly, his music would’ve been better.
This feels right
lowkey this lol there would be no competition for Kanye and he would remain on top.
100%
Would Wayne be having a longer run than expected?
Would Kanye's run continued after Yeezus?
How drastic would it be
If Ye never had Drake to compete with he probably would've got on the path to his Billionaire status a few years earlier because that rivalry with Drake is a big reason why Ye has even focused so much on rap after the year 2010
I think after Ye dropped MBDTF, he wouldn't have fully Retired, but it would have been his last true album for a minute
I think him and HOV would have gotten on their mogul path around the same time and after Watch The Throne, the only verses you would hear from Ye would be on a Cruel Summer type compilation or on a GOOD music artist's album
(and honestly I'm even being generous by still keeping WTT, because Ye himself said that Drake was the reason it was made. Stamped and certified classic, so idk if we wanna imagine a world without WTT but it could've happened)
He probably would have given a lot more push to people like Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, CyHi, and Kacy Hill and actually have a bit more time to develop them and take them under his wing as artists since he himself wouldn't be focusing on his own projects
things like YZY Gap and the Stem Player would've been a lot earlier, maybe 2014 or 15
Ye would have launched the Stem Player around the same time Jay was ramping up the launch of Tidal and together they would have cornered a lot more of the market for Hip-Hop streaming
Ye would probably be doing speakers and headphones to compete with Dre's Beats while also making Tidal the rival to Spotify and Apple Music
on top of that, if Drake wasn't around, Wayne would have run the game even into the 2020s because he just loves to make music. Wayne would have even more hits, and the gun case / prison sentence would have made him even hotter.
I think Wayne would still sign big acts because of this, maybe he woudn't discover Drake but he might find a weird kid from Florida who wants to be a rap rockstar just like Wayne was during the Rebirth era.
might seem like a reach but Wayne discovered Lil Twist and Cory Gunz, why wouldn't he sign a young XXX? If anything the pairing makes perfect sense. It wouldn't be an instant success, the world wouldn't instantly latch onto this edgy kid who made music about d*** use, violence, and depression, but over time they would respect his talent level. Not only would X learn how to move in the industry, be mentored by people like Wayne, Nicki, and Birdman, but he would also be plugged into the worldwide audience of Young Money and once he hit his stride musically, the step into dancehall and pop music would be effortless. By the time 2017 rolled around, XXXTENTACION would be essentially the crown prince of hip-hop who actually had a lot of parallels to Wayne with how early he started and how much gas he had in the tank.
Kendrick would be his generation's undisputed biggest rapper and only second in relevance to someone like Wayne
Tyler would be more popular at an early point but I think alot of Tyler's career is set in stone because he is who he is. Still banned from New Zealand, Still gets hated on for allegedly being homophobic, and ultimately still becomes one of the biggest moguls in Hip-Hop by the time he drops Flower Boy, Converse Deal, Golf Le Fleur. Only real difference I can think of is maybe his clothes become more popular around Cherry Bomb time period bc of the gap in the market with no OVO clothing.
Cole would basically have the same career
I think Nicki's success without Drake would mean an earlier rise in the relevance of female rappers
I think The Weeknd is an interesting question.. not sure where he would be
Although he's talented, Canada's music scene would be way more dry
Chris Brown would be bigger because he had less competition
especially when you factor in his relationship with Wayne, they would probably do even more collabs and maybe even tour together.
Tory Lanez pops off with Say It in 2015 and becomes the hottest artist from Canada for a good few years because the industry would embrace him
overall, rap would probably still become softer and more melodic due to artists like Kid Cudi, Ye, T-Pain, Nicki, and Future, but there would be less successful melodic rappers in the 2010s
People like Uzi, Carti, Juice WRLD still pop off like they did
I think. A$AP Rocky would have a similar career to what already happened, but just get with Rihanna sooner
Wayne's run was gonna run its course with or without Drake. So many rappers put their own twist on his style and ran with it that he couldn't really stand out anymore, especially since he seems to be more interested in other things than music the past 10 years.

amazing reply
and can def see all this happening, not sure if X would be recognized that early tho
I dont think Drake's run effected Wayne's at all tbh.
But music wise rap 2015 on would be a mess without Drake constantly dropping.
amazing reply
and can def see all this happening, not sure if X would be recognized that early tho
maybe 13 year old X is too young
not sure he was even rapping at that point
I'll say 17 y/o X, so mid 2015 is when Wayne finds his music and takes a liking to him
that makes more sense, thanks for correcting me
The Weeknd wouldn’t be here. Kendrick going on the club paradise tour affected him positively, not saying he wouldn’t be here, but yeah.
Female r&b would be the most obviously changed stylistically interestingly enough
Future and Thug would exist. So not much would change really.
I guess no Tory, Weeknd, PND n Jack Harlow
But besides that....
Future wouldn’t sound the same. Drakes lover boy music made way for futures lover boy music.
Female r&b would be the most obviously changed stylistically interestingly enough
where do you think Jhene is without being on the Classic track that is From Time?
In terms of his lack of influence? Not too much I suppose. Really, melodic hip-hop was already being brought to the forefront in late 2000’s thanks to Wayne and Ye. Besides, the washed up older rappers would’ve been washed regardless.
Thing is the only notable change would’ve been like what someone else pointed out itt, the popularity of trap-influenced hip-hop being delayed. Reason IYRTITL accelerated the process due to Drake effortlessly bridging that sound with melody and mainstream properties, hence the quick adoption of trap sound.
Thanks to tpain*** he set that trend for both of them. There’s a reason Ye had tpain help with 808s and heartbreak.

S*** man not where she is that’s for sure. But not just that feature, the style she blew up with is directly modeled after Drake in every way. And think about influential Jhene alone is? So that’s a removal of the style Jhene spread to the rest of the game, not to mention the other female r&b acts who have been directly influenced by Drake apart from the Jhene influence. Then there’s all the r&b producers whose production is often modeled after Drake production

when you think about it Summer Walker is Jhene's son fr
and you're right about how much Drake and 40's sound later infused with a bit of PND's sauce really changed the sound of music
A minute ago I was about ready to disagree with @TheRedOne saying that Drake's sound really paved the way for Future's sad music but I will agree that the instrumentals for some of his classic tracks would not have had that sound without Drake's influence

Honestly I argue that Chris Brown would actually be the biggest artist of this generation, because tbh when Drake came out with So Far Gone with a sing-rap style.
It completely blurred the lines between R&B and Rap, which leads to the fact that Chris probably would've never meet Tyga and make the same type of music he's been making for the last 9 years.
Female r&b would be the most obviously changed stylistically interestingly enough
you mind elaborating? i think i get the gist of what ur saying but i wanna be sure
i see a lot of people itt saying drake hasn’t been too cloned or bit off of
The Rihanna incident still would've f***ed many opportunities, but Chris' music discography would've completely changed.
But around this time, he would've found a great mentor in someone who was really good at R&B and Pop at the time.

ahhhh yeah nvm
i actually never connected how thot&b is essentially what drake does but just fem lmao
that’s amazing

Maybe in the sense of just R&B and Pop music as a whole but I tried to focus on rap since its my main genre & the thread title
However, since like I said, CB and Wayne have had a long standing friendship, its possible that Chris and Tyga still link up to make strip club bangers and the Fan of a Fan series.
tbh Tyga's run with DJ Mustard might have lasted a bit longer than in our timeline
I still think it would end but he would probably be seen a lot more favorably without Drake's massive success overshadowing Tyga's very respectable run and career.
